This is not a new idea; 2000 years ago a jewish man walked the very soil that is again being bathed in blood. It was a son of Israel who taught his followers, “If someone slaps you on the right cheek, offer the other cheek also. If […] your shirt is taken from you, give your coat, too. If a soldier demands that you carry his gear for a mile, carry it two miles.” Who said “love your enemies! Pray for those who persecute you!”9/

Yes, I have been traumatized by my experiences through the Covid pandemic so far, but not the way everyone says I ought to be.I have not been traumatized by awareness of our mortality, or through loss, or social disruption, isolation, ‘restrictions’, wearing a mask, distancing, online meetings, or any of the other bullshit peddled by opinion makers.Instead…#Covid19 #Peace #Humanism #Humanity #Covid19AB1/

Instead, I have been traumatized by the consistent, persistent, and callous disregard for the value of human life displayed by my own communities, except for a few shining beautiful weeks of solidarity in 2020. The current support or rationalizations for the atrocities being committed in Gaza are no surprise, because this is what the ‘good people’ showed of themselves here in their own communities toward the elderly, the disabled, children, poor, immigrant people, ‘essential worker’ people.2/f

@SingingNala @nq4t I understand “a picture says a thousand words” … but the fact that someone is unwilling to try even a dozen to include someone else is telling.[for those who truly don’t have the spoons # AltText4You will draw helpful selfless people willing to go the extra mile for inclusion]

@freemo @andymoose I suspect the reference was to the Yamagata strain.

@freemo @andymoose Of course that doesn’t invalidate the basic sentiment in the OP: the high level of illness, disability, and death we are experiencing from Covid is absolutely a choice. We have tools that could significantly reduce this burden, both at an individual and a population level, and largely we simply refuse to use them.Imagine a world where we continued to care enough…

@andymoose @freemo It wasn’t just that a somewhat obscure strain was eliminated… here in Alberta, we skipped an entire ‘flu season, with 0 lab recorded cases in 20-21. We weren’t “shut down”, we weren’t being locked away in isolation, we weren’t living pathetic lives that were only a shadow of their former selves: we were instead taking very simple common-sense precautions against airborne diseases.

@freemo @andymoose At this point Covid is with us for the long haul. I think this is where the message around a ‘new normal’ was mishandled. It appears people have decided a ‘new normal’ actually just means the old normal but with a lot more disease, suffering, and disruption.I imagine a ‘new normal’ in which we adjust our society to reality and stop mindlessly sharing respiratory viruses. We have the tools to bring Rt below 1 for most of them most of the time.

@freemo @andymoose Sorry the world was *not* in ‘lockdown’ during the ‘20-‘21 ‘flu season, especially our largest neighbour to the south …unless by ‘lockdown’ you mean ‘required masks in schools and public places’ in which case we shouldn’t continue this conversation.

@freemo @andymoose As the chairman at the time of a church congregation, I am very aware of the various measures in place as navigating them was very much my responsibility. There were no movement restrictions (though there were reduced occupation capacities for buildings) during that ‘flu season.

@freemo @andymoose I think we’re done. My point is that when people adapt their movement patterns and take precautions against airborne spread, rates plummet. Maintaining the measures that work for long periods will mean long term reductions.Continuing to use an inflammatory term like lockdown as a broad and blanket term for responsible measures is misleading.

@freemo @realcaseyrollins Complex systems take time to change… best practice is to look back a government of two to explain what you see now. The announcement of a thing isn’t the thing itself… that will take time. If a program is good look for an announcement ten years ago, and thank that person. If things are shitty, look for a change made 4-6 years ago.If I’m running full tilt across a field and trip, I won’t find the hole that tripped me where my body landed.

@freemo @realcaseyrollins Point taken, but to what extend to those immediate effects work out ‘in the wash’ as notable but in the end not necessarily more significant than any other demonstration of market volatility? My point is that we generally pay too much attention to economic weather and are blind to the things that affect the economic climate.

@realcaseyrollins @freemo Yup. Having survived half a century on this planet, I find it is more fruitful to spend my time on uncovering what actually *is* rather than other people’s perception of what they decided it ought to be.

@DrPsyBuffy Sadness or grief connected to Covid has become taboo… we’re supposed to have ‘moved on’ and acknowledging the pandemic in any way other than a distant past tense is a social faux pas. I can’t even begin to imagine what that does to someone processing the death or disability of a loved one, a kind of enforced never-ending denial stage,… it’s awful.
