@foone My brain went into an infinite loop at the measurement 5'12" and it took some effort to reboot it.It just did it again, typing the above.I suppose one could perfectly well go with 4'24", 7'(-12)" or various equivalences as well.

"Over 50 years ago, NASA was able to get its Saturn V, a rocket nearly as large as Starship, to fly without ever having a failed launch over its 13-launch, six-year operational lifespan. This was a rocket designed with computers less powerful than a Casio watch, built with far less accurate techniques and materials, with check systems and procedures infinitely less sophisticated than anything today. Yet, engineers were able to ensure it never had a launch failure [...]"https://www.planetearthandbeyond.co/p/spacex-has-finally-figured-out-why

@futurebird This makes me very happy. You are holding the world together, one class of fifth graders at a time.

@foone 2x10 pin male header for (probably) ribbon cable? Might that be a JTAG header? It’s what I commonly see for JTAG, and the first example shown here:https://www.allaboutcircuits.com/technical-articles/jtag-connectors-and-interfaces/

A photo from the frontlines in Christmas’s brutal flanking invasion of Halloween. This year it’s a surprise attack on Halloween’s furthest territorial border.(It’s still September for a few more days; we haven’t even reached October yet.) #WarOnChristmas

@foone They should bring back defragmenters. They were so soothing, when they weren't maddening.

@futurebird A long time ago, a friendly online acquaintance was browbeating himself about not having a lover or enough friends. I replied among other things, "Alone is not the same as lonely" and then largely forgot about the conversation.Around 5 years later, he messaged me to say that sentence had completely changed his life for the better. I was astounded. I'd just happened to tell him that at the right time for him.I hope yours also reaches someone who is at the right time to hear it.

@0xabad1dea I've observed in recent years that most cashiers in the US nowadays can not make change for a cash payment without the register telling them how much it is. They're completely lost.As all cashiers were formerly expected to do this in their heads, almost immediately, and I used to work a register sometimes in my teens, this drives me bonkers.

@futurebird I'd never really thought about it, but considering all the bookshelves and the improvised desk, and DIY stuff we assembled, it's probably about 1/4 "made ourselves." (My wife made more of it than I did, so she should have the bragging rights.)For the rest, it's more bought new, but probably a good 1/3 used.

Question for my Linuxheads (1 of N):For VMs on Linux, if I want to use an existing physical drive with OS installed and run it as a guest VM, like I used to be able to do in VMWare years ago, how do I go about doing this? When I look at virtmanager, for example, it seems to assume that I'm creating all VM drive images as files within an existing efs partition. At least currently, on the way towards fully switching over, I want to try booting my existing Windows drive as the guest OS. +

@grumpybozo Thank you! That gives me a much better idea what magic phrase to look for.And yes, KVM/libvirt and qemu are definitely what's behind virtmanager or it seems nearly anything VM-ish on Linux.

At this stage, I don't know enough to know whether* I'm using the right tool but not finding the right options, or* I'm using the wrong tool for the job, or * there are specific technical reasons I'm taking the wrong approach, or* I'm asking the wrong questions, or* whether the Linux answer is "you shouldn't be doing that entirely because it's Bad and Icky."(Hopefully the community has grown beyond the last answer but you never know.)

@futurebird For time travelers who were alive in the 1950s-1960s:Traces of zirconium-90 in the teeth and bones - looks like that would be the end of the strontium-90 decay products. There are plenty of other radioactive isotopes, of course, but strontium is special because biological processes react with it like calcium, meaning it rapidly gets incorporated into bones and teeth.
