I posted another blog post today, about why it is hard to move away from D&D as the primary RPG out there, and what to consider when suggesting games to move to: https://canageek.wordpress.com/2020/07/08/dd-has-infrastructure-things-to-consider-when-suggesting-games-to-replace-it/#Blog #TTRPG #DnD

@eldaking I would argue that.a) You still need a plot, NPC personalities, locations etcb) Most DMs aren't the skills adventure craftspeople they think they areSo even in a theoretically easy game you would still benefit from a pre-written adventure with built in plot twists and characters and such

@eldaking See my previous posts about how such games aren't a replacement for D&D

@eldaking These posts are in response to the twitter discussion going on. A lot of posters talk about how we should move away from D&D due to WotC doing bad things. But then they talk about all the indie RPGs out there and how people should just play one of those instead...and I wanted to point out that there are very valid reasons that people don't play those: They aren't the same type of game, they don't have premade adventures, etc

@mdhughes @eldaking that's fair, I tend to ignore osr games as I find their mechanics frustrating.sure you have 1/10 the rules, but the rules you do have don't acknowledge any game design improvements made since 1990 and I still have to look up a THAC0 every attack roll...

@mdhughes @eldaking that has improved a lot since the last time I looked then, in 2012 or so I sat down and looked over every retroclone and 90% of them were so close I couldn't tell the difference

@mdhughes @eldaking microlite74 head just come out, labyrinth Lord was around, swords and wizardry was around, and whitebox and redbox were around.microlight is one of the ones that I refer to in that 10%, so did you sending the 20 but all its other mechanics are straight out of 1974

Reading a review of FATAL as laughing at terrible RPGs was something I took delight in when younger and it is nice to reconnect:"You have 5 attributes, each comprised of the average of 4 sub-attributes, and you only roll for the 20 sub-attributes, using a (4d100/2)-1 formula. (In Another Land, this became (10d100/5)-1 . Again - no fucking clue why this change was made, as with pretty much any numerical shift between the two.)"

Dragonborn look really cool, but they are suck a product of current D&D design asthetics. I would love to see someone draw them in the classic fantasy 2nd edition art style, when armour was still at least loosely based on historical designs and such

You know what I really love about GURPS and The Call of Cthulhu and similar games?Characters can have *texture*. When I've played FATE and FUDGE they were more broad strokes: you got a few points, BIG ONES, to define your character. And that elegance is COOL, don't get me wrong. You want someone able to sit down at a table, see a character sheet and know what someone is about? That was damn cool.

But in GURPS or Cthulhu one skill point is almost free. You get over a hundred of the things. So you want to detail that your character spent first year as a English Lit major before moving into Theoretical Astrophysics? You can do that. Have a hobby skiiing? You can do that. Also: I love how over the long term the skills you have show the phases of the campaign. Like when we ALL took navigation due to our ranger taking a year off.

       1) Turns out your edits on Wikipedia can get likes. 2) I just got one for an edit I made in 20073) It was for removing an ad for fucking FATAL from its Wikipedia page. ........wut

(For those that don't know FATAL is generally considered one of the worst RPGs of all time due it its incredible amounts of sexism, massive amounts of racism, impenetrable rules, and strong suspicions that it isn't actually playable as written.

There is an itch.io bundle of RPGs to raise money for trans rights in Texas: https://itch.io/b/1308/ttrpgs-for-trans-rights-in-texasVia RPG.net: "Itch.io is offering a bundle of 493 RPGs - TTRPGs for Trans Rights in Texas!, with the proceeds going to the Transgender Education Network of Texas (TENT) and Organización Latina de Trans en Texas (OLTT). Titles include A Dirty World, Thirsty Sword Lesbians, The Things We Leave Behind and Wanderhome, as well as a host of excellent micro-RPGs, with a suggested donation of $5. "
