@sj_zero So we should be working harder now to make those changes that really matter. I would argue that the wars and mass deaths you fear will be worse and happen sooner if we don't seriously and substantially start making that shift now. The best way to avoid those wars and mass deaths you mention is to move away from our overuse and over reliance of a limited unequally distributed resource that enables us to live beyond a level of sustainability

@sj_zero When you are accelerating towards a solid brick wall it is a good idea to put on the brakes.

@sj_zero It is a moonshot to be sure. But solutions to most of the problems are more readily available than you indicate - or at least closer to fruition. Many, such as nitrogen fertilized that leads to environmental damage (especially waterways as source of human consumption) and long term soil depletion need to be replaced anyway. Eight years is not too short of a target. BAU is not a viable option. We can do better. But work is needed on many fronts.Huge transformations have happened before

@vik With climate change do we really know where the flood plains are and the risk factors? Where else do you build that is safe? If we move everything from the flood plains does that mean we do have to address waterway and watershed issues that make the flooding worse?

@vik This 3 Waters arguement is a cse study of the problems that occur when a chosen strategy obscures the problem it is designed to address. The core problem is that we have built our cities in such a way that a huge bill is coming to ratepayers to maintain the current infrastructure. If we could focus on this issue rather than a chosen solution, I suspect progress would be easier.

@vik The arguments against the 3 Waters proposals border on nonsensical. Stealing assets? These would more accurately be described as Liabilities. And this is an urban issue, Arround the Tasman rural areas I see signs saying "Stop 3 Water!". Hmmm, these rural folk aren't the ones that will be seeing the monsterous rate increases. What is their beef?

Is anyone familiar with the TESCREAL philosophies popular amongst Silicon Valley elite? I have heard bits of it over the years and it seemed to me a bit troubling, but I lacked a good understanding of it. Truthout has launched a series of podcasts on the topic.Curious where this lands with you. You can read or listen here https://truthout.org/audio/bizarre-and-dangerous-utopian-ideology-has-quietly-taken-hold-of-tech-world/

@strypey Yes, how to give genuine complements. Not so easy as it would seem. The way we have been trained to give compliments is problematic. People rightly distrust compliments as leverage to get something for themselves which leads to the suspicions you mention. Connecting your compliments to how someone satisfied your own needs makes it real. I have found this topic best addressed by Non-Violent Communication methods. Takes a lot of work to unlearn old patterns, though

@strypey Here is a quick overview of this idea and a possible explanation about why your compliments may not be received the way you would hope -https://www.nonviolentcommunication.com/learn-nonviolent-communication/nvc-gratitude/

@lightweight Yes that "Don't be Evil" motto - highly suspicious, and always likely to lead to evil... Like "don't think of an elephant" - bet you thought of an elephant, right?

@vik Yes there is a bad smell to this. Nothing real has been committed from what I can tell. Blackrock also has huge investments in fossil fuel. My guess is that they are one of the obsticals that Al Gore spoke about in his recent Ted Talk. https://invidious.lunar.icu/watch?v=xgZC6da4mco

@strypey Realy cool and give me good insight as to how to frame my own pakeha pepeha. I like the framing it about connection. Growing up on a farm in the semiarid West of the US I do have mountain and river. The larger the snowpack on Shafer Butte the better the flow of the flow of the Boise river and the more water for our farm (and recreation as well as the regional economy and well-being). I see how sharing this can create connection. Cool

@strypey Reading that article in no way convinces me that we are not in a bubble. I find his four arguments that we are not in a bubble to be meaningless. Either bubbles are part of the processes he argues indicate we are not in a bubble or, in the case of "Tech companies are still wringing plenty of innovation out of current generation models." immaterial to the question.

@strypey Like any system of governance, democracy has limits and drawbacks. Perhaps we have put "Democracy" on too high a pedistal and that makes is difficult to imagine something better. One of the things that I would guess these young people are not liking about modern democracy is the divisiveness it engenders in society. Us vs Them. I get that and feel that way myself. So I am open to other approaches. One that looks to me to have a few good ideas to learn from is consent-based sociocracy

@strypey I saw this and didn't get the Colombia reference. In the showdown with Colombia over return of Colombian nationals illegally present in the US, it was Trump who backed down by all accounts other than than the mainstream US media. Or is Cambell referencing something else?Watching Trump, he seems to almost always folds when is bluff is called - as long as he can spin it as a victory to his supporters

@strypey Hand in hand with defining what we mean by "capitalism", I find the vaguely defined term of "property" problematic. I some of my in standards for land administration domain, we have come to replacing the term property with the "3 R's", Rights, Restrictions, and Responsibilities. The libertarian notion of property ios rather unrealistically totalitarian as per Locke (likely more so). Nothing we own - including our own selfs - are free of restrictions and responsibilities alongside rights
