"Second, there has been acceleration over the past few decades in the total heat content of Earth’s oceans, where over 90 percent of the energy trapped by greenhouse gases in the atmosphere is accumulating. "cont...

"Third, satellite measurements of Earth’s energy imbalance — the difference between energy entering the atmosphere from the sun and the amount of heat leaving — show a strong increase in the amount of heat trapped over the past two decades. If Earth’s energy imbalance is increasing over time, it should drive an increase in the world’s rate of warming."fin.

@CattleBaron I have no idea, but it's a global average. Feel free to go through the data and check for us ;) https://zenodo.org/records/3634713

@strypey That’s cool, hadn’t heard of it. Looks like it’s mostly a text editor, is that right? So I’d see it as replacing Google Docs. I’d love to see a FOSS replacement of Miro, which is simply the most amazing collab tool I’ve ever used.

@risottobias @dan613 @signalapp That’s good to know. Means that $1/month is actually a reasonable subscription price, one that both covers running costs and leaves some profit to be spent on feature development. I’d be very happy to get entirely off of WhatsApp and instead pay Signal $1/month.

@Mathemagician @risottobias @dan613 @signalapp yup, the minimum is $3. A bit silly.

@Mathemagician @risottobias @dan613 @signalapp If I want to do it via the app, on a recurring basis (which is what I’d prefer over one lump sum), the minimum is €5! That’s surely missing out on the opportunity for some people to give what they can. @signalapp if you want revenue, make it easy for us!

I have a #Fediverse / #ActivityPub question: How suited is AP to sharing private content between people?I was wondering this while reading (good read, I recommend): https://www.theverge.com/23990974/social-media-2023-fediverse-mastodon-threads-activitypub. The idea is basically that we build Fediverse replacements for existing platforms. But so far, it seems that the successful Fediverse apps are copying open(ish) platforms like Twitter, or creating open versions of closed platforms (Pixelfed).So what's possible, and what are the limits of AP?#Question

I don't have any good idea of Friendica's features and how private they truly are. If anyone knows something about that, I'd be glad to hear it.#friendica

@enthusiast101 okay so AP can do private exchange of posts (not accessible to anyone except for the sender and receiver), but not encrypted in transit (also not at rest? So the server admin can always see post if they desire?). Is that correct?

The kind of platforms I'm curious if they can exist on the Fediverse while maintaining (or even improving on current) privacy:- Platforms where my profile and content are only accessible to the people I choose. (Facebook, Instagram, etc)- E2EE messaging. (Whatsapp, Signal, etc)- Platforms where I don't care too much if my actions & content are accessible to people outside of my followers, but I don't want this content searchable outside of the platform, or to be scrape-able. @protonprivacy Fantastic! What document types are supported? And do you/will you have an import tool for Google Docs? That’d make it very easy to switch over to Proton Docs.

@forteller @protonprivacy I’d also like to know this. And if they can collaborate (edit) and/or add comments for free (whether or not they have to make an account).

The rise of Mastodon has made me so much more aware of government services requiring us to use private companies’ systems to communicate with them and access services. Sitting on a Dutch train just now I was shown on a screen “feeling unsafe in the train? Contact us via WhatsApp”. What if I don’t use WhatsApp? (I do, but I wish I didn’t have to) I’m forced to share my data with Meta to use it. Public systems should not require use of private services. #NS #Netherlands #FOSS #privacy

Called it. All those articles predicting peak emissions were utter bollocks, there was no way emissions were going to go down this year. https://www.carbonbrief.org/analysis-global-co2-emissions-will-reach-new-high-in-2024-despite-slower-growth/#climateChange

“Total CO2 emissions, which include land-use change, are also expected to reach record highs at 41.6GtCO2, or 2.0% above the previous record set in 2023. This large increase was driven both by consistent growth in fossil-fuel emissions and abnormally high land-use emissions in 2024 – due in part to wildfires in South America exacerbated by a strong El Niño event and high temperatures.”
