@grammargirl Yes, the caps on Ocean Spray Cranberry Juice are really really difficult to open the first time now—probably thicker plastic attaching the cap to the protection seal. I’m pretty strong, but I can barely get them open.

@Teri_Kanefield @jackiegardina Not a torts lawyer either (property prof, so slightly relevant) but if a landlord provided no locks, I'm pretty sure they'd be liable for thefts and assaults that resulted, even tenants had the option of paying extra to get a decent lock.

Civil rights lawyers win $1.17 million settlement from Baton Rouge police for illegal arrests of protesters. Among the gems that led the city to settle were that the police filled out multiple sworn affidavits on the reasons for arrest before going to the protests. The only officer the city investigated after the mass arrests was one who complained that the arrests were unconstitutional. 🤦 #CivilRights #LawFedihttps://www.law360.com/articles/1577517/how-baton-rouge-activists-won-a-rare-civil-rights-settlement

OMG. A bill that’s passed the Tennessee legislature encourages students to report professors teaching “divisive concepts” (i.e., race) & requires universities to publish 3 years of course grades & to see whether divisive concepts “affected learning outcomes”give students’ entering test scores & graduating GPAs, “disaggregating underserved minority students.” In other words, if minority students’ GPAs are above their entering stats, it must be bc of biased profs #HigherEd https://www.wbir.com/article/news/education/new-bill-would-strengthen-rules-over-what-can-be-taught-in-classrooms/51-ddd267e4-3d98-4de0-bb2e-3284740b4cb7

Dismaying but not surprising--George Mason Law (renamed Antonin Scalia Law) built connections to Justices that gave litigants access. School provided Justices with luxury vacations "with a little teaching thrown in," urged them to take vacations at the ranches of litigants & allowed professors to file amicus briefs to SCOTUS as Justices were co-teaching with them. https://www.nytimes.com/2023/04/30/us/supreme-court-scalia-law-school.html #LawFedi #GeorgeMason #SCOTUS #LegalEthics

This is the thing--when wealthy corporations believe your vision of law helps them, they'll donate obscene funds to help you out. This is why #ScaliaLaw can fund fancy teaching trips for Justices (& law & econ bootcamps in vacation spots for professors) & the #FederalistSociety can pay for conservative speakers at law schools across the country. It doesn't always work--Elizabeth Warren attended one of those bootcamps--but sometimes it does #LawFedi

Took me a while to figure this out so I thought I’d share: @press@coop mirrors the twitter accounts of news media that aren’t on #Mastodon, like @nytimes @washingtonpost etc. So while you can & should follow press with mastodon accounts like @TheConversationUS @TexasObserver @losangelestimes following mirror accounts makes your feed work even better as a news timeline

Proud of #Wesleyan, my alma mater, for ending legacy admissions, but gotta admit my 2d thought was hey, my kid (who I never imagined going to Wes) won't get a benefit. In other words, I can see how giving up any #privilege (even one you didn't realize you had) can be scary. #AffirmativeAction #College #SCOTUS https://ctmirror.org/2023/07/19/wesleyan-university-legacy-college-admissions-supreme-court/

Texas sent 37 migrants, including 15 children and a three-week-old infant, by bus into Los Angeles during tropical storm Hilary. As LA Mayor Karen Bass says, evil. Yet more evidence the #abortion fight isn't about protecting children. #immigration #Texas #Hilary Gift link:https://www.nytimes.com/2023/08/22/climate/texas-migrants-hilary.html?unlocked_article_code=gW93xqn60Nb_S_s1Z8EGVtuHVOUhRJiNT6nPyVdq-HsSFl_g2_teNFcnkhIc1iuvnx6ycePSKIjCs3wwEhodpAqAWW_AcCms2xauj32NURFLnwjRvRoFIzoeurqwktUAnFobGBsBrwWkXwm_ENorDUXNXYTxwbDSc1miNyZr2DGqZeRi_9AVMlJGH470tD2CDAr1JpVc4W11N49FqLMxuO0O9GPXAjgt98MBec8divyX-B4dxHMnsD0PfWx4-2yuuXUg92EowrHITxx_5xOEXdIwwmD_Ck5gNpNJbz_X8Ei9o6E18Mp9m0n8ZZcYXtbUDRkV1IAqYOLsV4CUTK2n&smid=url-share
