@helenczerski I suspect most people don’t really appreciate how dilute ocean resources are, and how much collateral destruction their mining would involve.Take your analogy, you can get the kg of calcium by destroying the surrounding 100kg of person. For seabed deposits, what if you have to ruin 10,000 kg of seabed, 100,000 kg of seawater, and a million living things to get your kg of manganese?

Plenty of rotten apples in this barrel. This society lauded a police officer who lied and cheated and ruined lives. At last, a reckoning https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2024/nov/28/police-officer-spy-cop-bob-lambert-women-official-inquiry?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other

@futurebird in many ways, it’s the same argument that was misrepresented as ‘you didn’t build that’. Too many successful folks forget the broad swath of other people that were an essential part of getting where they are. Rugged individualism is a hell of an ego trip.

@futurebird @Em Would you recommend some reading on this, at say an undergrad zoology level?

@futurebird Maybe the interesting thing about bilateralism is how strongly it’s enforced externally versus not-so-much internally. It seems much easier to reflect the body plan and have two things rather than one, presumably tied back to early embryological genes. Then you get into a discussion of the plasticity or evolvability of linear repetition, giving you segmentation and flexibility, or amended with refusion back into platy enclosing structures.

@futurebird As you say, this is all about confidence.Confidence to say ‘hey I can try this’Confidence to say ‘this isn’t working out, I need a different tool from the toolbox, or some help, or some time’Confidence to come back later and persevere, and get a different view of your old problem. And the confidence to say ‘turns out I’m pretty terrible at this, could you help me please?’

@futurebird I suppose the only way to overcome the unsupported size on land problem would be either modify the mantle to produce internal calcification (a pseudo-vertebrate) or to modify it to produce external jointed plates (a pseudo-arthropod)?

@johncarlosbaez The only thing I can add is that it’s available on Kobo for £17, which is the cheapest I can find it that’s not on Amazon.
