I'm talking about the username pings, back when /r/drama was alive and well on reddit. Someone in a linked drama thread would be kindly pinged into the thread to be asked their opinion in a very genuine, not harassing way. Sadly the proud trans admins of colors saw through this ploy, and exposed /r/drama for the den of delinquents we now know them to be.

Funnily enough, unity was always my favorite, and I'm still mad that Canonical stopped developing it because too many linux spergs got mad that Ubuntu defaulted to it over something more autistic like GNOME or Xfce.

Federated forums is a fairly old technology, although from what I remembered the federation wasnt exactly a first class experience, it was more similar to a matrix/discord bridge than a true federated protocol. Those types of tech forums, niche as they were, basically bit the dust to content aggregators like digg and reddit, sadly.

also worth noting is that activitypub is still a viable solution for forum content delivery. It's designed to be platform agnostic, which is why microblogging, macro blogs, and video sites like peertube can all federate.
