@interfluidity Seems like something that would've been nice to know, back in the Bush administration!

@interfluidity was the Teamster's speech that good? Their flirting with the GOP has not been reassuring

@interfluidity the fact that it's so ubiqiutious makes me wonder. There must be some amazing data that shows (supposedly) it works better. It seems like such an obvious avoidable shot in the foot(Fwiw, i've found the Biden admins communications on student loan forgiveness to people who signed to be pretty big step in the right direction, relatively speaking. I don't know why it's so much better)

@interfluidity @marick While there has definitely been a shift in rhetoric, I don't really see how it's linked to the "woke" (or politically correct) part of the party. The "when they go low we go high" was the sort of thing normie Dems loved. At least in my little bubble, I don't even know if I'd call them related. I'm in a younger generation that is pretty "woke" but never would've had problem with something like the couch thing

@interfluidity for does: depends on the state: https://ballotpedia.org/What_happens_if_someone_votes_by_mail-in_ballot_or_absentee_ballot_and_subsequently_passes_away_before_Election_Day%3F_(2020)as far as should? Don't have a strong opinion, doesn't seem like it really matters. probably easier to just count them, but if you have an automated software check, sure, i guess.

@interfluidity @matthewstoller unless an administration is willing to outright ignore a ruling at some point, i don't ever really see this being resolved

@interfluidity nvidia is such an interesting example, for so many reasons. You talk about the chaebols, but nvidia itself is already notorious for how abusively it uses it's position to treat e.g. it's board partners. It also already has 1 or two (domestic!) attempted competitors, AMD and intel (if battlemage doesn't suck). Nvidia has always been at it's best behavior when AMD is nipping at its heels, and at it's worst when not. AMD not being able to keep up at the high end has sucked

@interfluidity probably not where you were going with this, but there is a nontrivial chance Trump ignores a SCOTUS ruling

@interfluidity That seems to mirror accelerationist thought pretty well. "Washington is broken but he'll break it faster", without any seeming regard for how bad/long things will be while it is broken (assuming it does eventually fix itself at all). A lot of people seem to think it'll be like a TV show; just wake up the day after the episode to the new fixed reality, and fast forward past the hard work of rebuilding.

@interfluidity seems like maybe not a guy we want in charge of sensitive wartime infra like Starlink

@interfluidity Was she that much more successful? I thought Gensler did pretty well (assuming you're talking about crypto)There's definitely differences in style- Gensler is a creature of Washington and works within the system, whereas Khan seems willing to reshape the agency in her image.

@interfluidity Unbanning Nazis on twitter is pretty hard to justify. It can't be attributed to a commitment to "free speech", given how often and capriciously Musk has banned things he dislikes

@interfluidity Depends on what kind of performance you want, I think. @geerlingguy just posted a video with it running on an Ampere One here https://mastodon.social/@geerlingguy/113908302786590210Not terribly fast at 4 tokens/sec (running on CPU instead of GPU), but it *is* the full model. Not bad for ~$5.5k or so?full GPU performance would be a lot more expensive still (although, what would you consider a 'small' community? 4ish people? 20?)

@interfluidity @cathygellis.bsky.social has made a similar argument around the CFAA and personal liability (and in particular, civil liability, which isn't pardonable): https://www.techdirt.com/2025/02/04/when-its-not-just-a-coup-but-a-cfaa-violation-too/And as a bonus, she is a lawyer. As a practical matter, I think it has issues (mainly SCOTUS), but it's line worth pursuing

@interfluidity Would this interfere with some of the goals in trade balance? In particular national security, learning by doing, (and maybe golden handcuffs)? In that example, Industria is still strategically vulnerable to being cut off from ore. Similarly, Ironia and Oceania are vulnerable to not having their manufactured tanks etc cut off.Ironia/Oceania don't get the advantage of learning by doing when it comes to manufacturing(I am not so sure about the golden handcuffs constraints)
