@Sandra Yes. As a citizen of the USA, this is my take: the first-past-the-post voting system is a major contributor to two-party dominance.I agree with the Represent US movement's thesis that something like ranked choice voting would change this. (I'm a donor, actually.)https://act.represent.us/sign/ranked-choice-voting

@Sandra Some of the points like "it hasn't been tested to do this" don't seem all that useful, I agree.

@Sandra Yeah, the biggest concern for me is "strategic voting," especially since it's very much a factor in the USA and the fact that in the example primary half of the voters just used the system as FPTP by voting for only one candidate is concerning. And note that this was a sample of "only registered Independents and non-affiliated Oregonians."

@Sandra (i.e. I would hypothesize that people who choose a party preference are more partisan, and more partisan people are more likely to vote "strategically.")STAR is an interesting system even so, and it doesn't seem completely impractical or anything like that.I liked this diagram, showing a weakness of RCV, as described here: https://www.equal.vote/accuracy

@stux I've also seen it done to spread misinformation about or with the supposed approval of famous people on other social media websites. But I can see how spam or low-level trolling would be a bigger problem for the Fediverse as it is right now.

@Sandra This is a hopeful story out of the UK with respect to climate issues;https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2023/mar/24/top-lawyers-defy-bar-declare-will-not-prosecute-peaceful-climate-protesters

@ZachWeinersmith Because his nose can determine if something he says is a lie?You know, I never liked the "I can only tell lies" logic puzzles, because I find it more useful to use the word "lie" to mean "intentionally deceptive falsehood."Why don't they say something more like "One of the actors only states falsehoods?"/end pedantry

@stux Even though I'm from the USA, I was told the story of the child who held closed the hole in the dam to prevent the town from getting flooded. (Hans Brinker?) Dutch pride 😅 🇳🇱

@stux FYI engagement rings are fun, but they're also something that might spend most of their time in a drawer somewhere after you get married. If the two of you have already talked about getting them later, it seems like your idea of a placeholder could work great! Good luck!

@stux I don't mind supporting, and I'd like to give more, but it would make me feel more comfortable if you'd publish a financial report regularly showing where you are tracking. It isn't quite as hard as it seems. A simple one would, for example, include a summary of the total you pay for hardware and other services, a total of recurring donations, and a summary of one-time donations since the last report. Basically just a small spreadsheet.

@bagder There is a germ of truth there, but they are misunderstanding in what contexts "reserved" identifiers may be used. Really a correct linter for C would report double underscore prefixed identifiers anywhere *except for the place they reported the message*. 😂(Also there are more reserved identifiers than that.)
