Very sad to hear the news of Carla Bley's death at the age of 87. A pianist and composer of rare talent and humility, she leaves a huge body of work. The last records for ECM with Steve Swallow, her partner, and Andy Sheppard are the sound of three mature musicians completely at ease with themselves and their music, but don't be deceived; she spent many years at the sharp end of the avante garde. I'm thinking about the great Carla Bley and how much I love this record. All the music on it is great but I especially like the inclusion of the nagging, ominous ostinatio pattern from I Want You (she's so heavy). It works so well in Bley's composition that I spent weeks trying to place it, looking through the classical canon and never thinking of the Beatles. This is the river Cam flowing towards Byron's Pool, so called because it is reputed to have been a favourite bathing spot of Byron when he was studying at Trinity, Cambridge. This is a curiosity. It's a musical tribute to the island of Jersey recorded in 1971 featuring an all British line-up with thr exception of Canadian Kenny Wheeler. A few months after this, Wheeler was releasing epoch making stuff on ECM. What he was doing here is anyone's guess. A favor I suppose.It's good but not brilliant. I'd be delighted to be able to play any of it. Worth the £8 I paid. The original 1971 price sticker reads 60p...#music #jazz #vinyl #vinyloftheday

It must have driven Andrew Hill crazy that me madenso many great records which went straight into the vaults. He had to wait 12 years for this excellent record to be released. Top notch stuff showing how much originality there was to be had working with relatively traditional jazz structures at the end of the sixties. It wasn't all fusion. I just saw the Bill Frissel Trio at the Union Chapel, London. They opened with a 60 minute improv/medley and finished with a fabulous version of What the World Needs Now. Breathtaking. #music #jazz #billfrissel
