@supernovae I like the default. If clients had a mode that presented just the first part of longer posts with the option to expand, that would allow wordier posts to be used without clogging up the timeline but without that feature being widely available, I’d prefer not to see longer posts become common.

@amerika @caekislove Bad actions on the part of corporations are no excuse for inaction on a personal level. The effect of lowering personal impact must of course be multiplied by many people taking such actions to be effective. Let’s take transportation and food, for example as they each have, according to current estimates, roughly equal carbon emissions. Switching to lower carbon emission vehicles, or consuming less meat, can only help if many people do so.

@ricci The most annoying thing about Mastodon filtering is that if I make one to filter out jort content, I have to be careful how I name it; otherwise all I will get in place of such messages is an endless stream of notices saying "Matches filter jorts."

@kwf Although the term did originate in the US, itʻs widely used throughout nuclear and particle physics internationally as a unit of cross section, conceptuallly the likelihood that particles will interact when crossing each other. It can be viewed as the effective size of the interaction window and so has units of area, as you probably know. Most interaction cross sections are small in these units and so a barn is pretty big. @ricci My suggested alternate version:To err is human, to really f* things up requires a computer (preferably connected with many others), but if you want to have no idea what you are doing at all, you need AI.

Unexpected surprise visit from a former student. He dropped by after 10 years to say that I had inspired him and given him the confidence to pursue what he wanted to do, that he and his wife are both doing well and that after several years of growing salaries he is going to start his own business. Made a long trip just to say so! What a nice way to complete an afternoon.
