@publius @psyklax A) What point is there too miss? Also you totally missed and misrepresented my point.B) I never said that was their sole purpose and I think it's telling that when I talk about property law you immediately jump to "humans = property". Either you have immoral principals or assume I do.C) Uhh, I do. In fact, I will include screenshots of the definition for ya!

I found one still standing out in the wild today, but sadly I did not have change on me to see if it's still operational. Is it bad that I kind of want to convert a payphone into a VoIP home phone? #payphone #vintage #phone

And just for curiosities sake, here's a #poll:Have you ever used a payphone and how do you feel about them?

@publius I think at some point I actually found a place that sells decommissioned pay phones for this exact purpose. They were a little pricey, but I guess that is the struggle of having nice things...

@publius @jebug29 Of course, they would argue that they are paying for it by offering a service that you don't have to fork over money for. Sadly, too many are willing to trade their data for a "free" service.

@cs How about the easy solution of stopping draconian enforcement of arbitrary traffic laws. Speed limits do not determine safe operation. Someone's sh!tbox from the 90s probably isn't safe at the same speeds as a new corvette. Speeds that are fine on the empty highway probably aren't safe when there's heavy traffic. Why is one highway in my area 85mph and others are 65mph without a difference in the road? Oh, because the fast one is a toll road and speed limits are about revenue generation.

@publius @cs See I would say that all the "safety" features we add have worsened the problem. We are now so removed from feeling like we are solely responsible for a few tons of steel hurdling down the road at 70 mph with massive energy. It's easy to feel like you can pay less attention to the road when your car will automatically stop, manage cruise control speed, keep you in your lane, etc.

@publius @cs I have no problem responding to road conditions even at high speeds, but perhaps it's because I drive cars that do no thinking or acting for me so I know it's all on me. Perhaps it's because I ride motorcycles and know the dangers. Also, remember that big places like Texas need cars and trucks. A Walmart is 40 miles from me, ranchers routinely haul livestock 100+ miles so others can eat, if I need to catch a flight I have to drive 100-300 miles for an airport.

@publius @cs Very confident; so far, no crashes even when driving when others wouldn't like ice storms, heavy rain, being tired, etc. It's just a matter of knowing your self, your vehicle, and both of your limits (and your envirmoent) and operating within them. The speed limit is still the same at night out here, but the actual speed you can safely travel is very different when the highways haven't been mowed recently and their are hogs and deer hiding in tall grass.

@publius @cs I'm not arguing that excessive speed should *always* be used, just that speed limits are arbitrary and often used as a revenue generation method especially by small towns. Safety is not a speed limit; it's ensuring that drivers on the road are competent and those who are incompetent are kept off.I'm saying this as a person who has only ever owned manual cars with no driver assistance other than ABS or cruise control.

@publius @cs Honestly, the most helpful road safety strategy is what I learned riding motorcycles. Anything and everything *will* kill you; always think of how you're going to respond. That car - gonna merge into you. Can you move lanes, speed up quickly enough, or slow down? That grass - deer are hiding in it. Will you be able to swerve enough to dodge it or brake quickly enough to not hit it?That curve - there's gravel in the middle of it. Are you going so fast it will make you crash?

So work has decided that me bringing my high end Windows laptop is a "security risk" and that I should also not have my Ubuntu laptop there or my Debian dev server. Something about "internal threat blah blah blah your not in IT blah blah". Anyways; IT Dir. said he would get me a better laptop if I needed it. Should I get a one of the newer MacbookPro's with the M series processors? I do a fair bit of creative work and those seem to do well with things like video editing.

@publius That's one way to look at it 😂 I was perfectly content just adding a second hard drive to my $1500 laptop and dual-booting Windows and allowing them to control policies on one install but they didn't like that either.Honestly, the draw to the Mac is it is probably as close as I can get to Linux while still keeping IT happy.

@ParadeGrotesqueWell I know some people who have left this instance just because of their frustrations with the people on it. It tends to attract a lot of the same types and blocks do many instances that the mods don't agree with. Can make it feel a little like an echo chamber. As many tools as there are to control what I see, I would rather control who I interact with rather than have moderators decide what's kosher and to whom I may speak.1/2

@ParadeGrotesqueHonestly, it's even gotten to the point for me that setting up my own instance in on my to do list. I don't want to be an admin for anyone but me and maybe my family, but I do want to have access to all of mastodon so I can control who I interact with. We don't even have reasons why we have instances blocked when I checked our block list.
