@soatok A lot more people would be interested in Mathematics if our grade school didn't absolutely fail to teach it in every conceivable way. While there ARE learning disorders that hinder learning math, nearly EVERY non-math person I talk to tells me that they are inherently incapable of anything past basic arithmetic. I can only see this as a systemic failure to teach children what math is and how it works, and a penchant to carelessly leave behind students that don't initially keep up.

@futurebird Wait no one told me I could opt out of that. Where's the option to pause my subscription and then automatically renew down the line?

@futurebird That mentality drives me up the wall as a "math person" myself, even when it comes from people I know who say they aren't. This isn't to say discalculia or related conditions aren't a thing, but our education systems, even on a global level, are so incapable of teaching mathematics that it's instilled in probably tens of millions of people that there's something intrinsically wrong with them for not "getting it" immediately from the specific way it's taught.

@futurebird Very true! And that baffles me, too. Why would people want to keep, of all things, MATHEMATICS as some kind of secret club?Do you have any idea how much I want to talk to my friends about cool stuff you can do with math? And also looking down on Statistics?? Some of my favorite stuff to DO with math is counting things, and statistics is just finding the most insane ways to count things and then making those results fight each other for dominance.

@futurebird For me it's not so much that it's STATISTICALLY not likely to be on Earth, but more that there are places in the universe (supermassive black holes, mostly) where space and time themselves literally shift and cause and effect get fuzzy.I'd argue something that happens around there is the closest we can get to objectively weird, on a universal level.

@futurebird Remember when it was going around that ChatGPT couldn't count the number of letters in a given word? Like, saying Raspberry had 2 R's?It's because it breaks words down into chunks, not letters, for some unfathomable reason. Thing is, if you asked it how it figured that out, it would demonstrate that it broke the word down into individual letters, then count each letter, and then get a different answer that might ALSO still be wrong, somehow, and then go "See? Like that."

@futurebird James finally gets home after a strange day. His parents are still out working, but at least the dog is around. He collapses on the couch and looks the concerned pitbull in the eye, reading the question, 'what's wrong?'Not sure how else to put it, he just says it. "My teacher ate my homework."

@futurebird You're definitely right that people who get scammed and then later come forward to relate their experience about it should be lauded. But in the case of crypto, I'm always a little hesitant to feel all that bad..So much of crypto from what I've seen has basically laid the scam out in the open and is about convincing people that they're gonna be the scammer, not the scamee. I find it hard to find sympathy for someone who loses out when they were trying to do the same to others.

@futurebird Two or three years ago now, The Mandella Catalogue, a YT horror series about eldritch doppelgangers, released a video called "Correspondence" which was basically a tutorial for a program that took pictures of your face and made a digital version that said funny things, but was obviously a front for gathering facial information to train these doppelgangers on since they're as unable to understand humans as we are them.https://youtu.be/rf-OSO5Wrbk?t=1575

@futurebird You go home and tell this incredible story to your partner. They laugh. They always laugh. "Why can't you just believe me for once!?"Six months later, you file the papers yourself. The ants carry on, unaware as a whole of any aspect of your life, save for one. He looks up, ceases his labor and steps out into the open to stare at the sky. And then, his unique part of the Great Ant Prophecy of All Things having come to pass, his spirit leaves him.His body will not be wasted.

@futurebird As I recall, they weren't traveling home: it wasn't just a census, it was a census that required people to go back to their place of birth. Not where they currently lived, where they were born.

@futurebird I always just thought it was used as an action that something takes or knowledge someone has that doesn't require conscious thought. We humans might have some things from birth (avoiding bodily waste, recoiling from pain, etc.), but can train ourselves (or be trained) to add to or subtract from that list.
