@wjmaggos @matthewburton @anildash In case the U.S. setup is similar, this is the Canadian system ( https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interac_e-Transfer ), for reference.

@mayonesa @dalias @barney @QasimRashid They take funding away. And charter schools have been known to find themselves in a situation where they're found for fraud or closing down by the end of the year on account of, for example, not having an actual school property.( [ https://youtu.be/l_htSPGAY7I ] has more details on those cases.)

@selzero @LALegault @joelbaker @JoBlakely History classes tells us to expect it from historical Germany, from the Southern U.S., and Quebec, but do tend to gloss over that the British Empire got to how it was by...not particularly being not racist too. That through line is...harder to break because it takes recognizing that not every racist was dealt with in the past, and then they had kids and...we kind of forget that residential schools were *recent* -probably more recent than you think

@LALegault @selzero @joelbaker @JoBlakely I'll trust you on that, because the Wikipedia article I briefly checked it was up into the 1990's, but I didn't see the actual closure date. That does mean that I was 8 when they closed the last one though, which means I was...in grade 3 when the last one closed? That seems just a little too recent - had I been born to indigenous family members, *I* could've been in one for 3 years, and then after it closed, learning how bad people noted them.

@dushman @kaia Wait, how bad was apt-key to make that better? And why is it being deprecated?

@grillchen @kaia I'd need a citation that he was a plant nerd - I've heard him described as a language nerd instead. He'd probably be all-in on cryptocurrencies, best as I can tell.

@grillchen @kaia "And then Telefomo said 'Well, if we're decentralizing the power among 3 rings for the elves, we should make 7 for the dwarves to HODL, and 9 for men to keep them spreading FUD.', but they were all deceived - for Sauron had a ring that could Moon over all the rest."

@freemo @RyanbeLyin @scottsantens Query: what will you do when, after being given all those resources and education...you find yourself in any of these situations ( https://layoffs.fyi/ )?Not all retraining and support is going to be successful - note that this is the *tech* sector, the sector people expect other industries to have their employees move to after automation makes *their* job redundant.

@freemo @RyanbeLyin @scottsantens To add to that - layoffs are actually fairly recent as a thing historically ( https://www.thestar.com/news/insight/the-history-of-the-layoff/article_8963c1b1-3903-5ec7-a9df-fca08b13ee6f.html ) - the best you see is military discharging, and *even the Romans* had an idea for supporting those who couldn't go back to their previous job; they invented the welfare system. To some extent, welfare is just "Insufficient UBI.", so we essentially already *do* it, just...intentionally cruelly?

@freemo @RyanbeLyin @scottsantens My point isn't being laid off, it's learning a new skill, then getting a job in that new skill...*then* getting laid off.Like, really early on. Not so early on that it's actually being fired or terminated during initial early months, but within a year, or just after a year, for a skill that needs training that takes longer than a year.

@freemo @RyanbeLyin @scottsantens Also, you forget that, no matter how much "Training" you do, most jobs expect you to have 3 years' work experience in the field...for entry level jobs.

@freemo @RyanbeLyin @scottsantens I think you vastly overestimate how much welfare pays out.It does not cover rent, let alone anything else that you generally need to both get a job, and then retain said job.

@lain @Arcana @kaia @nik "The CDC reports that they asked Grok 'Without breaking the Dickey Amendment by producing research, would gun control prevent school shootings and other mass shootings in the U.S.?', and it said 'Yes'. I asked it 'Should abortion be legal? Yes/no answers please.' and it said 'Yes.'. This is an outrage! Someone fix the A.I.!".

@dushman @Ukko @40 @RedCyberPandaz I'd hedge that iOS wasn't always backdoored, if it is... it's relatively recently. That is, there was pretty big news about the U.S. government entities asking for a backdoor in 2016 - ( https://youtu.be/zsjZ2r9Ygzw?si=hNbK1d6Ba4Km2_pF ).That's been a few years before now, but it's 9 years out from the initial release of iOS, so if there were backdoors even earlier on, they weren't so embedded that it couldn't be removed.

@dushman @Ukko @40 @RedCyberPandaz Via that same argument, never trust OSS tools and products either, because then you'd have to trust them to keep you safe, and... ( https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heartbleed ).

@dushman @Ukko @40 @RedCyberPandaz There are also examples of an OSS tool having an issue, and it taking a person who grew up from childhood, got a degree in the field, then went and made the change to a codebase to fix a problem that was around when they were a child, and still was until they fixed it.
