@alex I think the reason is so that if someone has your token, it invalidates it.If the other person refreshes the token, then the original token will no longer work, raising red flags for the actual user.

@alex can you not have both? I don't have to much experience working with making websites.

@alex Ah, makes sense. So, in theory, a website could have both without negative effect, but the client would only fetch one?

@alex As someone who's still learning how to develop APIs, I still don't really understand how to access, refresh, etc. a key. As in, I understand the concept, but I don't know how to implement it, especially when I just want to make a piece of software that only I'll use and I don't own a server.Something I found useful is one service I use, exist.io, gives a developer a token to their account when they start an app. I don't know if that's standard, but it means that I don't have to work on refreshing my token for another year!

@alex You should put your API on https://programmableweb.com/, a website dedicated to cataloging apis

I'm thinking about helping my college set up its own instance of Mastodon to help the students attending virtually to connect with students on-campus. Any thoughts or things I should know about while pitching this or setting it up?

@Tommy the https://invidio.us/ instance is closing down, so you may want room list a few alternative instances for it

@alex the problem I see with this article is 1) how are the polls taken? The electoral college is not a popularity contest. As we saw last year, winning the popular vote doesn’t mean you become the president. 2) I don’t think either side will accept the results of the election. If the republicans win, the democrats will say that the republicans suppressed mail-in voting or they’ll find ballots somewhere. If the dems win, the republicans will claim voter fraud. It’s sad, really.

@Tommy you did, but I would think that list will be taken down when the invidious instance goes down. I could be wrong, though.Sorry if it seemed I was being rude or nitpickey! That was not my intention.

@icedquinn I personally use Bitwarden for my password manager, and it works really well for me.

@icedquinn I can try to answer any questions you have, but it syncs reliably and works very well. After having way too many passwords, it starts to slow down unlocking a bit (though that could just be a problem with me - I have lots of this kind of problems), bit besides that, it works great!

@robertwYour home timeline is all of the posts from people you're following. It's like the homepage of twitter, except that it doesn't have an algorithm to show you more posts - once you finish your feed, you're done. There's no algorithm trying to keep you hooked on the website.Your local timeline is all of the posts from your instance. For you, you're registered on social.quodverum.com, so you get all of the posts from others registered on this site. For me, I get all of the posts from rcsocial.net, since that's where I'm registered. The federated timeline is the posts from everyone on every . instance that is known by SQV. So that includes posts from RCsocial, SQV, and pretty much any other instance SQV knows about.

@luke @zhoreeq If you want a federated version of Tiktok, why don't you make one?You could modify Peertube, Mastodon, Pixelfed, etc. to function in a similar way and host it yourself. That way, it'd be based on to ActivityPub and be interoperable with other federated software.
