@hn50 "Greed Bastards" is my generic term for entities that follow the principle of "you owe us money, we owe you nothing".

@APoD And just a reminder everyone: z=14 means that we're looking at originally ultraviolet light redshifted down to infrared!

@hn50 From Mad Magazine's "Mission: Ridiculous"—"Okay, I'm finished splicing the tape! Listen...""Goot evening girls! It is a brand Nu– clear day... perfect for goink– fission!"

@isaackuo @cinebox @cstross @Hcobb @nyrath I fear that an expanding colonial Kardashev-3 civilization would regard existing in an actual physical body in an actual physical environment as a tremendous waste of resources, and forcibly download all of us into virtual reservations.

@Hcobb @nyrath The ideal englobement would be four ships surrounding their target in a tetrahedral formation: each ship can fire at the target while staying clear of the rest of the flotilla.

@hn50 Da fuq??? Was a line of pagers secretly manufactured with explosives embedded, or has a software hack been devised to cause the batteries to overload and explode? Either way sounds like something out of science fiction.

@hn50 Fast cheap iteration of test designs vs. massive multibillion dollar government programs? Sounds like rocketry.

@feliks Meh, the vast majority of people in the past lived lives of dull grueling drudgery (and most of the rest was episodes of danger, suffering and terror). I presume the future will be likewise; and people then will tell stories set in the turn of the 21st century about tech billionaires, SOCOM warriors and fashionable celebrities.

@hn50 I haven't watched it but I understand it's a prequel to the Dark Crystal movie. Which begs the question, how does getting genocided in the end constitute "resistance"? I mean, there are no words for how ignominious their defeat was.

@futurebird @golgaloth Do keep in mind of course that ants aren't capable of "wanting" anything or reflecting on what they're doing. They're robots blindly carrying out a program created by a million iterations of selection. The question is whether an ant colony as a whole can have a distributed meta-consciousness. Now for organisms where individuals have larger brains (naked mole rats?) then you start blurring the lines between a hive and a society.

@stux Voyagers 1 & 2 weren't optimized for maximum velocity, they followed the trajectories needed for their flybys. And that's not even considering what we could in principle build today (nuclear-electric). So I don't think "At Voyager's speed it would take xxx..." is really the best yardstick.
