It is such a pleasure to reduce app and browser clutter and use #emacs for #matrix, #mastodon and #rss. I guess shifting out from Discord and Thunderbird will be next :-). #emacsforeverything

@eqf00 I understand why Electron is popular for cross-platform applications, but I dislike Electron itself as it hogs resources and allows for zero customization. I am currently using Discord in the browser. How is the bitlbee-discord workaround? As I need to be able to do video calls and share screen through Discord.

I am planning to move away from #github completely, for now I am using #sourcehut. I do need to host a static website and the options seem to be surge.sh, Vercel and Heroku in case I use SourceHut for git. Yes, Sourcehut has it's own static hosting too! Any suggestions ?PS: For now I will need free options until I figure out "anonymous" payment systems.#feditips #git #hosting

In continuation, @tdarb, I came across your post about switching from Netlify to Sourcehut, and then back again at https://tdarb.org/blog/jekyll-sourcehut.html. You do mention build time slowness and minor issues. If you don’t mind sharing, how slow was the build time on Sourcehut? TBH, I’d be fine with even one build a day for my use-case.

Happy to report that I have successfully moved my website out of #github onto #sourcehut. In addition the website is now natively generated in #orgmode. The only portion that I have used python for is to generate #rss. The new website is at http://fui.sdf.org/ thanks to the wonderful folks at @SDF. Any comments or feedback would be appreciated.

I am trying to figure out anonymous payment mechanisms at this point to buy a domain name and donate to #sdf. All my scouring of the web points to Njalla and 1984, and the only anonymous payment system seems to be through Monero for domain name ateast. If any of you know how I can donate anonymously to @SDF, please let me know.

@edgren Agreed, the advancement on Linux is amazing. If only word processing from Libre/OpenOffice (ala Pages and MS Office) could get better. I’d be able to completely ditch Windows. I do have to run Windows on a VirtualBox for this and a few other regulatory filings in my geography.

@edgren LibreOffice and OpenOffice are terrible at maintaining formatting from MS Word created/edited documents but this isn’t the case other way around. As almost everyone I interact with uses MS Word, comments and revision modes are a nightmare. Libre often crashes when opening documents and then there is a substantial time spent in a loop in “recovering” other open documents. If these issues were fixed, I’d have no reason to not use them and it would make it easier to convince others too!

@edgren While all of these issues are not technically an issue with LibreOffice or OpenOffice but a result of Microsoft’s way of handling documents, it is an unfortunate burden they have to carry to increase adoption and fight the lock-in effect.

@edgren @Mehrad That is great to hear! I continue to have them and haven’t been able to find suitable fixes. I used to always send PDF versions earlier, but have now returned to VM usage as I’ve been unable to resolve these compatibility and formatting issues for other folk who don’t use LibreOffice.

@Mehrad I’m on the latest version of LibreOffice too, given compatibility issues and the scare of opening files with unknown formats, using .odt scares many people unfamiliar with other formats. Most of them operate on .docx files that come with a header and a footer and certain template formatting that they have no liberty to modify. It is a slow process to get all of them to slowly appreciate FLOSS, and find the right tech support for it too. :-)@edgren
