I gained weight because of circumstances outside of my control. I wasn't even "fat" for an American but I was overweight and it started to show. I got sick of seeing myself in the mirror and lost like 80 pounds in over the course of half a year just from dieting. I gained some of it back because I had neglected working out but I'm losing it again.I want to stress that I wasn't even that fat. I was skinnier than a lot of people but I still felt disgusting. IDK how ppl can be obese and not decide to do something about it...

Thanks. It's been a reoccurring struggle and my end goal (have visible abs) is still a bit away but I've made a lot of progress and I feel like I have a good shot at getting there if I stick to it.But just not seeing a chubby person in the mirror feels so good. I'd probably off myself if I had to see an obese person every day...

And not coping. So many people told me I wasn't fat or looked fine when I mentioned I was unhappy about my weight.And then when I lost it those same people and many others were shocked at how quickly I changed. But that only happened because I was harsh and honest with myself and dismissed their dishonest assurances.

It's hard, you don't just have to be not overweight you have to be pretty low in the healthy weight range. But I'm going at a good rate now so I think I have a shot.

It's in someone's best interest to be honest. It also helps them overcome any actual insecurities if you can be consistently honest with you as they'll trust your judgement more.

It's a natural coping mechanism but many natural behaviors aren't healthy. The utility of social norms is in guiding people to healthy behaviors and away from unhealthy ones, unfortunately in modern times the norms do the exact opposite and encourage the worst in people.
