Hallo Admins von kleinen Instanzen!Irgendwie lässt mich in den letzten paar Tagen der Gedanke nicht los, das #Fediverse mit einer eigenen kleinen #Mastodon Instanz zu unterstützen und ich habe ca. 1000 Fragen. Mir ist bekannt, dass es Anbieter wie masto.host gibt. Sehe das aber als Lernprojekt um Kenntnisse auf einer Single User Instanz zu vertiefen, um anschließend weitere Accounts auf der Instanz aufnehmen zu können. Welche Spezifikationen sollte ein Cloud Server so mitbringen um ne kleine Instanz für ca. 20-50 Leuten zu betreiben? Mit welchen Kosten muss ich rechnen? (Schau mir gerade die Standard Cloud Angebote von Hetzner an… Alternative Hoster Empfehlungen?). Was ich bisher so mitbekommen habe, ist die Anbindung von Relays ziemlich spannend um die Konnektivität der kleinen Instanz zu verbessern. Dieser Punkt scheint mir wichtig und ich könnte mir vorstellen, dass sich sowas auf die benötigten Ressourcen auswirkt. (Eigentlich überhaupt nicht interessant für mich, aber aus reiner Neugier würde mich auch interessieren mit welchen Upgrades man mit 200 oder sogar 500 Accounts rechnen müsste..)Was für Erfahrungen habt ihr mit Updates und Backups? Wenn alles mal läuft, wie viel Zeit steckt ihr so in die tech. Wartung? Wie lasst ihr eure Instanz laufen? Standalone, yunohost oder doch Docker? Und da ist natürlich noch die Frage: Standardversion oder glitch-soc (oder ähnliches). Gibt es rechtliche Aspekte beim Betrieb einer Instanz? Ich selbst habe Erfahrung mit Ruby and Rails, ich würde mich aber nicht als erfahrener Serveradministrator bezeichnen. Gerne auch Links zu längeren Erfahrungsberichte, falls zur Hand.Grüße und danke schon mal an alle, die bis hierher gelesen haben ;-)

@stux Hey stux! Danke das ist sehr lieb. Mir fiel dein positives Engagement von Anfang an auf. Ich habe gesehen, dass du auch stuxhost.com betreibst. Ein Provider mit Erfahrung in Mastodon Hosting hört sich eigentlich perfekt an. ;-).Wenn ich dich richtig verstehe, würde für den Anfang sowas wie stuxVPS X2 mit zusätzlich Storage über zB wasabi ausreichen, oder? 2GB RAM bei stuxVPS X1 wirkt zu wenig, oder?Der Punkt mit den externen Medien war mir noch gar nicht bewusst. Aber macht natürlich Sinn. Hier reden wir wahrscheinlich von externe Medien von allen Followings. Spielt bei den externen Medien auch das Einbinden von Relays eine Rolle? Reden wir hier von 100 GB oder eher mehrere TB? In welcher Form verbessert das Speichern von externen Medien die Qualität der Instanz? Mehr und länger Speichern = Bessere Instanz?? Oder gehört ein regelmäßiges Löschen der entfernten Medien zum normalen Betrieb einer Instanz?Abgesehen von Storage, wie viele User könnten so eine Instanz (stuxVPS X2) zusammen benutzen? Wie viele Nutzer wäre auf stuxVPS X4 möglich? Kannst du dazu Schätzungen abgeben?

@stux Ok. Das hört sich für mich so an als ob mehr Storage zu einer komfortableren Instanz für die Benutzer führt. Ist weiterhin ein Backup für die lokalen Medien bei wasabi nötig? Mehrere hundert aktive Leute wären erst mal mehr als genug.. haha lol. (Pgbouner schaue ich nach.. sagt mir gerade nichts, aber ich werde recherchieren)Vielen Dank noch mal.

@GreenFire Isn&#39;t industrial agriculture not as big as a problem as fossil fuels? Plus it is in our hand to change it. We just need to stop buying this shit. No one is forced to eat meat.. I feel like it is to late to ONLY focus on fossil fuel.

@GreenFire thanks for the updated numbers. I must have mixed it up with mobility(cars and planes) or something like this. Im not sure anymore. Is it really a good idea to comfort people in the believe that their habits are totally fine while heading towards an ipcc path with leads to +3 degree?Not sure what&#39;s alienating about healthy food. People need to wake up.

Some more thoughts on both apps: #Logseq ++++ Blocks can be linked/embeded.+ TODOs have more features like time tracking. + App feels very light &amp; UI is cleaner.+ PDF annotations + #OpenSourceWeird: Hashtags are pages. Limited template engine (!!), File management (notes &amp; attachments). #Obsidian ++++ Templates much more flexible and might be the argument to stay with Obsidian.+ Better File Manager, which leads to cleaner vault and better overview of all notes, additional to GraphView.+ Mobile app supports plugins. Using both with the same data is possible depending on how you setup your workflow.Obsidian forces you to make smaller notes to be able to embed or link junks across your notes. Logseq encourages you to work in larger files and use blocks instead. Blocks are powerful. But block links or embeds are probably not working in Obsidian or any other markdown viewer. You also need to decide which data format you add to the top of your markdown templates, if you want to use Queries in Logseq or Dataview in Obsidian. Logseq would be a nice entry point for journaling and task management (&#39;TODO&#39;). But here already starts the limitation. I would not be able to query Logseqs TODOs in Obsidian, which is essential in my setup. (If you know anything, let me know)If I use Obsidians task notation (&#39;- [ ]&#39;) I loose features for the task itself and not sure if I still would be able to add an overview of all open obsidian tasks to my daily note in Logseq (maybe Logseqs advanced queries can do it, not sure). I would switch completely to Logseq if there where better templates and a better file manager. I really like the TODO feature and how Logseq looks and feels. Maybe I miss something with Logseqs template variables. Letting go from a hierarchical file system seams great, especially with blocks. In theory each block could represent a folder and I need to get used to it. But in the end.. some folder structure could improve browsing your plain MD files.STILL UNDECIDED... 🤦‍♂️

Update: I kept journaling in Obsidian and getting a feel for using linked notes and how powerful this can be. I tried a few things in Logseq and the user experience is quite nice. Typing, linking and working with templates is easier. Embeds can be edited directly. Also when using share menu on iOS, Logseq adds a timestamp and a tag to the link/file. Small details, which really lets me want to fully switch and embrace the folder-less way (which really freaks me out). Capturing details on the fly has to be as easy as possible.Still not migrating or using both at the same time. I tried it. But some links were broken after opening my vault in Logseq. Need to investigate another time. From what I read, its recommended to use Markdown links. But Logseq seams to encourage to use wiki-style links (I guess because of the flat hierarchy of the files system). The readability of wiki links is higher and easier to edit. But in the end no valid Markdown. Now Im confused and don&#39;t know how to link probably and future proof.

Ok. My Note taking / #journaling journey goes on. Someone pointed out to me via DM that there is also #logseq.org, which is an #OpenSource alternative to #obsidian. Looks pretty interesting. A new rabbit hole opens up. Wondering what you think about those two app. Are you using one of those? Let me know why you prefer one over the other?
