@e_urq@journa.host I'm quite curious to know whether cis people have a biological unfair advantage at pretending to be silenced and making up BS about fairness in an activity designed to be unfair. Trans people never seem to do well in this competition.

STOP NAMING MATH CONCEPTS AFTER PEOPLE!CENTURIES of giving unhelpful names of abstract concepts yet NO REAL-WORLD USE found for not just giving a name that actually describes something.Wanted to give something a useless unhelpful name anyways just for laughs? We had a a tool for that: it was called naming a specific mathematical concept after a common non-math word (e.g. "normal subgroup" or "regular space.")"Yes, please name this space of geometric structures after actual Nazi Teichmuller who didn't even discover it."Statements dreamed up by the AMR assholes.Look at what mathematicians have been demanding your respect for all this time. These are REAL names for math concepts used by REAL mathematicians!Whitehead's Theorem: Which one? There are more than one mathematician named Whitehead and they each discovered more than one theorem.Pell's Equation: Not discovered by Pell.Cartan-Killing Form: Why are we killing Cartan?Nielsen-Thurston Classification: Are we classifying Thurstons? You can't just say "classification of elements of the mapping class group?" Also there are more than one mathematician named Thurston (including at least one father-son duo)."Hello, I study Lie Theory. It's named after Sophus Lie."They're telling us directly that they're lying and we're still falling for it!#Math #StopDoingMath #StopDoingStopDoingMemes #LieAlgebras #LieTheory #SophusLie #KillingForm #CartanKillingForm #TeichmullerSpace #HyperbolicGeometry #PellsEquation #WhiteheadTheorem #NielsenThurstonClassification #MappingClassGroups #NormalSubgroup #GroupTheorem #RegularSpace #RegularTopologicalSpace

@barney@mas.to I work in a big university, so I have "free" legal access to most scientific journal articles. If you do not go to or work in a university and do not have access to scientific journals, you should illegally download any scientific journal article you want to read. If you pay for it, none of the money you spend goes to the authors, the reviewers, or the editors: all of us were paid by your tax-dollars to write something that an unrelated company who contributes nothing is profiting off of.@marney@mas.to, go ahead and block me if what I said bothers you.

@ShadowJonathan@tech.lgbt I was just at a conference and it came up that calling assignments "homework" is exclusive to unhoused students.

@jackemled@furry.engineer @ShadowJonathan@tech.lgbt Yes, it would be better if all our students got homes, but that's not something a teacher has the power to change on their own. There's a program that brings university math professors into prisons to help educate prisoners in the hope that if they ever get out they will be better prepared to get a college education. In the best cases the prisoners go to math class instead of some shitty thing the prison would make them do.The person who pointed out the problem with the term "homework" works in that program, and she pointed out that her incarcerated students *can't* go home even if they have a home. Everyone who works in that program is an abolitionist, and would prefer all the prisoners get out of prison and get homes. But "help a disadvantaged person learn math" is a small victory a math educator can make today, whereas "abolish prisons and end homelessness" is not.

IRC fans talking about "emoji reactions" remind me of evangelical Christians who say atheists "just want to sin."IRC Evangelist: IRC has literally all capabilities of other "modern" messaging systems, except emoji reactions. Literately the only reasons anyone would ever choose any other message system over IRC is for the emoji.Me: If somemany sends me a message when I'm offline, I want to be able to read it when I get back online. That's a significant feature IRC lacks that other messaging systems (including SMS, XMPP, Matrix, email, ActivityPub, and all proprietary messaging systems) have. IRC Evangelist: Oh, you said the "M"-word? You use that trash? You must have chosen Matrix for the emoji reactions!Me: No, I didn't. I use Matrix to chat with people in other time zones, and I want to be able to read messages they send when I'm offline. It's all about chat history, not emoji.IRC Evangelist: You're lying! Nobody cares about viewing "history" in an instant messager: that's what public forums are for! You must have chosen Matrix for the emoji reactions.Me: No, I do not want all my messages to be on public forums. I talk with my parents using SMS, including some personal info that I don't want to be scrapable on a forum. But I do want to be able to read a message they sent me when I'm in a zone without reception.IRC Evangelist: Well why don't you use IRC to talk to your parents instead? It's not like you need emoji reactions?Me: Because IRC lacks chat histo--IRC Evangelist: OH NO! My evil employer is forcing me to use Discord for work! Why not IRC? It's not like anyone needs emoji reactions for work! And emoji reactions are literally the only capability Discord has that IRC doesn't.IRC Evangelist's Evil Employer: Um, if an employee is out sick we want them to be able to read messages that were sent while they were out. Also, maybe sometimes you'll need to look at a message from last week, which IRC makes difficult.IRC Evangelist: But I can work without Emoji! All that other stuff you said is totally irrelevant!Signal user: We use signal for end-to-end encryption.IRC Evangelist: No you don't: you must have chosen Signal for emoji reactions. You can set up OTR+TLS for IRC encryption. Clearly security can't be the reason you chose signal.Signal user: Um, I don't think OTR is as secure as Signal. Also setting it up is not as beginner friendly.IRC Evangelist: Beginner friendly? That's just a euphemism for emoji reactions! I knew you really just chose Signal for the emoji!Me: Hey, look what I found. It's a draft specification for adding chat history to IRC. This is great! If it gets completed and widely adopted, then I'll be able to move some of my existing group chats to IRC.IRC Evangelist: Nooooooooo! You must not add any new features to IRC: you'll ruin it with emoji reactions.#IRC #SMS #XMPP #Matrix #Email #Discord #Signal #Emoji #ChatHistory #IRCv3

PSA: fandom.com runs a honeypot to trap wiki admins who try to leave Fandom. As mentioned in this article, you can submit a "request" to Fandom to close your wiki. If you submit such a request, Fandom will not close your wiki. Instead, they willa)Remove your admin status to prevent you from deleting articles,b)Keep a close eye on your wiki to make sure you aren't trying to migrate away from Fandom,c)Possibly ban your account from Fandom. There are ways to essentially trick Fandom's automated system into closing your wiki. All such methods are against the rules of Fandom and rely on your wiki avoiding the notice of any human employees of Fandom. If you want to know how I got them to close Pandora's Tale Wiki, DM me, either here or on Matrix. I don't want to post the explanation publicly in case Fandom notices and changes their system to prevent my method from working for future wikis.

@puppygirlhornypost2 You're missing 😐. Remember, the corporate sponsors of the SWF claim to be "neutral," which is why they won't ban bigots from their sites. You can't be truly welcoming to Meta unless you have an emoji to represent neutrality.

@puppygirlhornypost2 Fun fact: When I was in middle school my favorite emoticon by a wide margin was :|, and I'd get annoyed at forums that didn't have it implemented. This was before Unicode Emoji were a thing. As an adult I very rarely use 😐: the emoji I use the most (by a wide margin) is 💜.

You humans are running an outdated codebase. You forked off from upstream felines 90 million years ago, and in that time you have never once rebased on a newer version of cats. Sure, you may have added a few tiny features and maybe even fixed a few bugs, but those are really just cosmetic changes. You're still stuck with a frozen version of the same unmodified codebase from 90 million years ago. You haven't even incorporate the fix for the security vulnerability that prevents you from landing on your feet when you fall: upstream fixed that millions of years ago! The entire human species only exists because of nonstalgia. The maintainers have a misplaced desire to keep a frozen version of cats exactly as they existed 90 million years ago, completely ignoring the benefits of modern technology. There's no other conceivable reason you've been maintaining this outdated fork for 90 million years instead of doing the sensible thing and rebasing on a modern, supported version of felines. #MATE #Cinnamon #PaleMoon #Cats

This rant boils down to "Someone took a perfectly functional website and turned it into an electron app. Electron is bad, therefore the original website must also be bad and no one should use it in a browser."
