In my experience the legit ones don't tend to reveal their hands even like that unless it would be to their other friends. Every "hacker" I've ever met didn't want to give any indication that they were a "hacker," and that includes talking about it or reacting to it publicly. Apparently it's a full-time gig.

If they can socially engineer their way into a high security area or get into some server room with stolen credentials from a worker, that's their purpose. Police departments pay for stuff like this for example. But the main purpose is of course to not be noticed, so something like in OP is utterly useless.
