People are cheapskates with poor people but spendthrift with billionaires. I just listened to someone complaining about how "the garbage union" has schemed so that there are always two people operating NYC garbage trucks to "waste my tax dollars" and I guess making too many wealthy sanitation workers... oh no the horror.I like that there are two people on each truck. It's more efficient and safer. But, even if it was somehow a waste I promise you that's not who is wasting your money bud.

I'm struggling to even getting myself into the headspace where two people working a truck is upsetting to me. Maybe this person works for UPS or some delivery company where drivers work alone and it often very dangerous. (but just workable) and they want everyone to suffer? How do you look at a $7,000,000 patriot missile and get mad about more people being employed in the very honorable and *life-saving* work of collecting garbage?

@futurebird Honestly, I wouldn't operate heavy machinery or handle potentially dangerous items like that unless I have someone with me.Let alone in NYC traffic.

How have so many people been trained to think like they are private equity managers who just want to cut every job, anything that makes middle class people exist? And this comment had a bunch of likes ... none of the people getting mad about this really are private equity managers. They won't get rich. But the sight of people with "cushy" (livable, decent) jobs just makes them mad? It's so depressing.

@gbargoud I love the new trucks so much. I get that some people are mad that it was expensive to develop but we really needed a better solution. Can you imagine how horrible it'd be for traffic if there was just one guy in the garbage truck? Trying to run the arms via a camera? It'd be a disaster.

@futurebird It also doesn't make much sense if you do some math. Not sure about your garbagemen, but here they will empty those bins in under a minute. Which means that the the wages of 1 or 2 people doing that is not having that big effect on your garbage bill. They come every 2 weeks, take under a minute to empty the bin, so you are looking at 52/2 = under 26 minutes a year for your bin.

@photovotary It was the comment section on a video where people geek out about garbage trucks. (yes this is how I spend my free time)I was shocked at the passion this dude had for making a two person job into a one person job.And yes, that would save money, but we all know it'd also make the results worse. It's corner cutting on something that I think is valuable and important. It never occurred to me that there would be people who look at guys with good jobs doing real work and just hate.

@ehproque This whole thing where they are so excited to eliminate real honorable work, like taking care of old people and taking away the garbage at ANY COST transmits a kind of deep disrespect for real work that I just can't abide. It is so deeply anti-social. I love high tech solutions and robots. These things can make this work faster, and more effective. It can make the work safer. DSNY die in the line of duty all the time. We should talk about that more.

@billiglarper Maybe it just because it's the kind of thing that seems "smart" that's how most media frame it.If I had a dime for every guy who has said to me "the largest expense for a business is payroll" like it was some kind of revelation maybe I'd be rich enough that I'd understand how they think about jobs.Of course the largest expense is payroll! If it isn't what is your company even doing? Probably not anything of value.

@Illuminatus @baishen It's just I thought that part of "work ethic" was valuing work. Saying "thank you" when someone cooks and brings you a meal. Understanding that if someone cleans up after you? You should have deep respect and thankfulness for them helping you in that way. Nothing feels more like "spoiled brat" to me than someone who doesn't respect this kind of work. They could have just left you sitting in your own trash and you would deserve it. @futurebird @baishen @billiglarper Back in the 1980s, university systems allocated mainframe computing resources with various token systems. Georgia called them bananas.BTW, that system gave way to PCs, which were nowhere near as powerful as the mainframes, but which didn't need to be managed with micro payments. I suspect generative AI token services will go the same way.

@billiglarper Our bins don't really have any designated place to go. They are put on the street or sidewalk which is horrible. The city is trying to change this by making some parking spots into pick up areas but it means that we needed a truck that could lift a dumpster from the side. These existed for single bins, but not full dumpsters. So we have our own new trucks now and they are very cool. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bxvvEaQ1wN0&t=294s

@futurebird When I worked in recycling it was a treat to go out on the rounds, making a load of noise, slowing down the traffic, just getting out the shed for a while. A few years after I left, an old colleague had a fatal heart attack while working on those kind of trucks. Two workers should be the minimum for a whole load of reasons.

@futurebird @billiglarper I’ve been wondering for a little while if motorised wheely bins could be a real thing. Once a week, a truck blocks the road and slowly empties them all. But what if each one had motorised wheels, a battery, and a little bit of electronics, so once a week at, say 2am, they could all take drive themselves to a centralised collecting area. The batteries could be swapped out if needed and recharged, and then they’d be sent home.It doesn’t matter if it takes them an hour or so to get there and in smallish convoys they’d be easy to spot and overtake. If they go at a bit over walking speed, they’re no danger to people crossing the road, and at 2am they don’t need to avoid too much traffic. If you don’t want people to have to empty them overnight, just send out a clean replacement rather than sending it back: people don’t need to have the same bin every week and it’s fine to send the ones from Monday’ collection area back to Tuesday’s area the next night after they’ve been emptied, charged, and cleaned.Probably wouldn’t work somewhere as dense as NYC, since they’d need to be able to reach the road, but might even work there if you let them out in the evening and they trundle away as soon as traffic density drops low enough.

@futurebird @billiglarper I find the way that the mission text on the side gradually turns into a threat a little strange. I'm used to things like that being more along the lines of "Emptying your bins!" in a jolly handwriting font.

@toerror @billiglarper It's just how people in NYC are. We like to have everyone think we are very tough for some reason. It's not true, though. It's just a way to make a little personal space.

@Nerts If you made a little box with a big red button on it (and nothing to indicate what it might do) and set it up on a NYC street it would be just a few seconds before someone would push it. Ask them why? You'd get a blank stare. People just push every button turn every nob, wiggle into every crack. The other reason you need two people on the garbage truck is so you don't have some kid trying to ride the thing while it's lifting. "that wouldn't happen"No it will.

@futurebird just two is upsetting - there are usually three in our part of Scotland (driver and two walking large parts of the route moving the wheelie bins from the curb to the truck and back). And less staff and it would take far longer and cause traffic flow issues - that alone wouldn’t be popular. How on earth would anyone think this could work with just one person ⁉️

@futurebird Hmm. The person who complained has: 1. Never emptied other people's garbage 2. Has never driven a commercial truck in narrow alleys or city traffic. My wife used to drive a tractor trailer (53 feet) in NYC to deliver pallets of food. And had to navigate between park cars, unaware foot traffic, speeding cyclists, and angry drivers trying to block her or unsafely cut her off.Since she drove alone, she had to take chances without any help when trying to back up or turn or get into/out of driveways. The city is not for faint-hearted inexperienced drivers. Commercial drivers get a premium to deliver in NY because it's not designed for commercial traffic, and well, because of impatient aggressive New Yorkers. Boston is as bad, with tiny winding streets and lots of Massholes. After that person's car gets smashed or sideswiped by a one-person city garbage truck with one person, tell them "you got what you wished for, and don't you dare sue the city and raise our taxes."

@futurebird Carl Icahn and Milton Friedman. It used to be that business management, for all its faults, was about stewardship of the institution rather than pleasing the most sociopathic of its short-term shareholders. Those two psychos very quickly created a meme (in the original sociological context) that infected a generation of people who were out to maximize their own pleasure. It changed the culture as a whole.

There are at least two big wheelie bins (general refuse and recycling) and a small bin of food waste / compostable (tissue paper allowed). Some areas have more kinds of big binsPrivatisation crazy with 3 operators at different days, but only fortnightly collection instead of weekly. Needs to be back to councils.Glass to bottle banks in car parks.Cans & plastic bottles to collection that gives paper to spend.

@billiglarper @david_chisnall @futurebird That’s an amusing image … but there are *so* many ways for things to go wrong in that system. Often the best - ie more robust, resilient, and cheapest - systems involve simple components and people paid reasonably not just to do the work but have brains, adaptability, and problem solving skills.

@DavidM_yeg @billiglarper @david_chisnall My big concern is the same as Fran talks about in this video. When companies try to implement these systems they find ways to do it that steal public space. Why can't the robots park inside of your business and charge there? No room? Huh. Interesting. Looking at the robots the first thing I think of is that in NYC people would sit on them. (which will be very funny) So that design won't last at least. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2gRrjMlL3Mo

@futurebird @DavidM_yeg @billiglarper @david_chisnall Idea: robot bench networks. wanders the city looking for people to sit on it, learns to find where the largest number of people want to sit and only leaves there when that region is saturated with bench robots. As soon as empty, robot wanders in search of more sitters. Bench robots dispense media about how to build more bench robots.
