"fandoms" tend to coalesce around works of fiction that are massively popular and that have younger fans. That's probably why there isn't a massive Ian M. Banks (The Culture) fandom. And maybe it's for the best, but I do wish there was more fan art of The Culture. What smaller or more obscure fictional work do you wish had a big online fandom?

The worst fandom is The Bible fandom. So many factions, so much infighting, so much non-cannon fan fiction. And tons of fake fans who have never read the manga.

@futurebird in Scotland Ian M Banks is fairly popular. A couple of years ago I had more contact to local sci-fi communities, but they were more about dr who.I don't think the problem is size as such, but Banks is fairly complex and there have been no films and no merchandise. So it's difficult to have a convention with cosplay and screenings, it would just be a book club. When I'm there next time in June, I'll check out what I have in Forbidden Planet (SciFi shop)

@futurebird probably Gormanghast. I wasn't particularly interested in Titus Groan, but the structure itself, and the supporting cast - Steerpike, Swelter, Flay and Prunesqualor and all the rest, endlessly fascinating.

@futurebird I'm very fond of the work of Cordwainer Smith (Paul Linebarger), (showing my age), but I'm not sure there are any other fans of the Instrumentality; I suspect they're thin on the ground. Some of his stories are problematical; The Crime and the Glory of Commander Suzdal for instance. But I still love the multilingual play with names. Some of the stories are branded on my brain. The cosplay would be good, I think.

@futurebird Yeah, and so many versions of the "original" text. Protestant versions (which discriminated against greek translations) vs. the "second canon" bibles that Catholics use. Lots of protestants cite the King James cut, but there are even two versions of that. (There is a New King James cut which I think includes deleted scenes.)#Bible fandom is a hot mess! (Hellish, some might say!)

@futurebird imagine writing a story 300 years after da "facts", then claiming it 'd be accurate toda point of murdering "non believers", another 1700 years later, I mean there 's no mindfck that comes close while sanity runs away shrieking in horror ... as for that whole "last fight" misconception, that 's when da last abusive dip finally figured out there's a more sensible way to communicate than trying to bash each others' heads in, ain't that hard to see nor live by, just common sense ...

@futurebird The Edge Chronicles series. Which has its own art in a very striking style, and every year when I remember it exists I am again both surprised and not surprised that nobody's tried to do an animated series. (Not surprised because that style would be difficult and expensive to animate, but also surprised because as a series it would lend itself beautifully to 2D animation.) It also surprises me not to see a particularly large fandom around it since it is aimed at a young-ish audience (maybe pre-teens to young teens?) and it leans heavily into steampunk. And has sky pirates.

@futurebird I think it is both hilarious and emblematic of Bible fandom that as soon as someone started a project to translate the Bible into Klingon, there was a schism (over how to translate the names of Earth animals, e.g. "Lamb of God"--to use a transliteration, or to substitute a similar animal from the Klingon homeworld?).

@futurebird They've almost always only consumed derivative works. Children's books, local fan productions with select excerpts, clip shows, and prefer their own projected main story over the real one, even retconning some of the actual good quotes. "The actual 'eye of the needle' is a gate in Jerusalem" is much more annoying self-serving fan fic than any retconning for 'doing the Kessel run in 8 parsecs'.

@futurebird I continue to be sad that The Broken Earth series has so little fandom, like I actually find the more ordinary world lore like the use-castes more interesting than the literally earth-shaking main plot of the trilogy, and it would be nice to see those explored in transformative works. I did see a handful of great BE fan art on Tumblr like this one of Syenite with... 131 notes? 😔 Still. It's so gorgeous. https://lj-writes.tumblr.com/post/180321425492/faerymoleskine-syenite-by-bookine-have-you The comparison to The Culture is actually somewhat soothing, though, because they're both definitely more mature works that younger fans don't coalesce around as much which helps explain the phenomenon.

@futurebird I wish there were fans of a Richard Powers novel that I think was heavily influenced by writings of Albert Camus. I was already thinking about a creative metaphor from Powers’ book, Generosity: An Enhancement, in relation to ants when I read your earlier toot about ant eyes: “Blessed are those who don’t believe, yet see.” My point here is that, unlike humans, ants are unburdened by religious dogma. Hermann Hesse once wrote something similar about Trees.

@futurebird I’d love it if Cordwainer Smith fans filled in the gaps in his future history. He died too young, and was too busy in his extraliterary life, to connect the whole saga.Do I think fans could actually achieve this in a way I’d want to read? They would need his stylistic verve and imagination, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@futurebird Comparative religion studies made the Christian bibles a joke. I had delightful debates with an Episcopal minister in a diocese high school. A year of Old Testament & one of New Testament KJB. His definitions of heaven & hell remain true. The definition of heaven on earth is,“Active directed sensitivity towards another person without expectation of return.”Hell on earth is,“Active directed insensitivity.”

Uplift Saga by Brin and Mars Trilogy by Robinson would round out the things I would like to see.

@futurebird I hangout with filkers, who write and sing songs inspired by science fiction and fantasy literature. At a con in the US I introduced a shape note hymn as being “found filk from one of the most popular works of fantasy literature.”Got a slightly frosty reception from all the people I wanted to piss off, so I call that a win.
