.300 Savage released in 1920 and uses a shortened .30-06 case with about 48,000 psi of pressure in the powder charge. It is very similar to the .308 Winchester which was developed for the US military after WWII and hit the commercial market in 1952...which is also based on a shortened .30-06 cartridge but with higher powder pressures of around 62,000 psi. Therefore having a little higher bullet velocity and recoil. The .30-06 Springfield is around 60,000 psi for commercial loads. So the .308 is even more powerful than the .30-06 in a shorter action with less weight. Which is why the .308 Winchester basically has replaced both the .300 Savage and the .30-06, both of which are in decline in pouplarity. The .300 Savage was very popular in the early to mid 20th century and is still chambered by several of the large rifle manufacturers to this day, though not in the huge numbers of the mid 20th century. The .30-06 retains more of it's popularity remaining a Top 10 cartridge in North America, whereas the .300 Savage is around Top 40. It's a powerful round and excellent for deer hunting especially in forests and fields of Eastern US or where ultra long range is not a consideration. From Left to Right.....300 Savage, .308 Winchester, .30-06 Springfield

If I can't kill it with my .308 Howa, I'm not shooting at it LOL.I would prefer a heavier round for bear or elk, neither of which I hunt.A .308 180gr soft point will rip the fk out of hogs and deer. All I need.

I love the 7mm Mauser. I imagine the 8mm is very similar. A little slower with a heavier bullet.

I love the .308 because it can be had virtually anywhere and everywhere, and gets the job done. Another reason I picked that as muh hunting round.

Cant argue with the .308. It's as powerful as a .30-06 in a shorter action and lighter weight rifle and ammo. One of the most produced rounds in the world and used widely in militaries around the world. I have an embarassment of riches when it comes to rifles and can play a little deeper, but when the SHTF, the .308 is one of the rifles coming along for the ride.

I put a K98k on an Archangel chassis with a long-eye relief scope and it fucking rocks. Took the floor plate out and use 10 round mags. Bangs shit out at 500m.

Very nice. I use the 7mm Rem Mag and the .300 Win Mag for my long range snipers.

I've got so many different guns for different things my wife bitches about the number of them. I told her they are an investment and that I bought them for "the coming man." (Our son) Too bad she got the Hitler reference. 😆

I remember the first time I did an 80 round match using the garand (30-06). I wasn't used to it, so my shoulder was sore the next day.

Most all of my hunting is inside of 100 yards. I don't even have a scope on my .308. I have a night-vision compatible 1.5 MOA red dot for hunting hogs at night. My buddy has 2 PVS 7s mounted to replica military helmets used for paintball n sheeit. My deer stand is 25-30 yards away from the feeder. No I do NOT hunt them at night or out-of-season. That may change, tho, when the political climate makes harvesting my own protein mandatory for survival.

I have several Savage 99 lever actions in .300 Savage. The 400,000 or so of those that were made are the core of the continuing .300 Savage ammo production. There were quite a few bolt actions produced by Savage, Ruger, Winchester, Remington et al as well.

Same I might take a shot up to 200 yards in a fallow field ocassionally. Most of my shots are inside 50 yards in the woods. I mostly hunt with the .300 Savage 99 and the .30-30 Winchester 94 lever actions. Dont need the extra kick. Here is my nicest Savage 99.
