In the time of Christ, bread was not just food, but it was a symbol for community. If nobody cared about you, you could easily just procure wheat berries and boil them into a porridge. Slaves mixed this with castor oil and filled their bellies pretty often; this was the absolute least amount of effort they could put into feeding slaves, and that is what they did. However, eating bread meant that someone cared about you. They had to grind the flour into wheat and bake it. You could share bread. You could put things on the bread. Bread is just significantly nicer, and it takes effort to make the wheat into bread. When you sat around a table and eat bread, you were part of a group of people. "Breaking bread" meant sharing bread with people. There is a similar object today that is found in churches, police stations, and corporate offices - the donut. Most churches in the US - regardless of denomination - have a box of donuts sitting somewhere near the congregation where people grab a donut and chat after service. These donuts are often from the local donut shop. Few people eat a donut if they are not in a group of people; it is almost always a communal food. Indeed, it is the pinnacle of what communal food is: someone cared enough to grind the flour, someone cared enough to make it into a ring, make a glaze, put the glaze on the donut, and make it look nice and donut-shaped. Then someone at the end of that went and spent $1.50 on you to give this thing to you. They did all of this because they care about you and want you to have a nice donut. This is possible because you live in a community, and not just an economic zone.Although you can totally just buy a donut for yourself, you never do. It doesn't matter that you *can* just go buy a fucking donut - the point is that if you're eating a donut it's probably in a social context.Ask yourself when the last time was that you ate a donut together with at least one other person. That tells you how connected you are to a community.

I miss doughnuts, but I refuse to eat the seed-oil-fried goyslop sold by the major chains.

I used to eat donuts with friends all the time. Then the local donut shop was bought out by private equity, its products were turned into shit and all the locals who worked there were replaced with imported migrant labour who couldnt speak english
