Chat, is it worth buying fancy food for an older cat with early stage kidney disease?

I used to feed chicken gizzards and organ meats. I need higher fat and lower phosphorous and lower protein. I suppose there are a few more specifics, but that’s the simple recommendation

Wet food is even more expensive. I am not being cheap. I am trying to survive and raise a family and save a beloved pet.

found some good recipes. We cook all the time, so the only special thing I’d need to buy is and taurine.>1/2 lb chicken thighs with skin (cooked)>2 egg huhWhites>1/2 tbsp chicken fat or fish oil>1 cup broth or water>two tablespoons cooked huhWhite rice>cat vitamin mix powder or supplementsShould keep in the fridge for 3-4 days and that’s nbd. My wife loves chicken so she’ll be happy.

It's not cheap. If you can't afford it, you may have to put the cat down. If you feed it what it is currently eating it may suffer. Maybe try a phosphate binder. It's about $25 but it will last a few months. I don't remember if you need an RX. You need it for the KD food which seems crazy.

You just sprinkle it on what you are feeding them. I think the KD is just premixed.

Yeaaaah, thats tricky. I'd still try to look up if there are any recipes specifically for kidney disease. It's worth a shot anyway. I wish you and your furry friend good luck! And remember lots of pets and cuddles while you are still together. I miss my lil booger everyday. Even though I have my girls now. He was my special little buddy.

there's some ointment you can apply on the ears that helps with that too. Ask your vet about it.Also, YES

I had a cat that the vets couldn't figgure out what was wrong with him. His stool was like water, and he couldn't hold it. Put him on Primal, the raw frozen food they make, after looking around on the interwebs. He lived another 3 years in good health.

I was told my dog would live 2 more years, tops. Switched food and she's on year four and doing much better.A lot of the "fancy" or "prescription" foods are simply normal food without absurd, poisonous filler.

We tried but our cat didn't like it and just wanted his regular food. He'd purr like crazy if I pet him while he was eating.

I can't remember. He had a few health problems at the end, including hyperthyroidism for a couple years before his kidney problem started. We treated him for a while but you can't cure old. He was a good cat.

Its expensive. But you could look into making your own even. Raw kitty food. Especially if you're a hunter (or know a hunter) can be very cost effective. Lots of resources online.

My dog was diagnosed in November and he's doing really well on it. He seems otherwise happy and healthy. I thought he was basically dying back at the time. I expect to keep him another 5 years as long as the kidney failure doesn't progress. It's worth a try and at the minimum your cat will suffer less.
