       Then just walk away, slowly so he can have a chance to respond. If he does not say anything, just keep greeting him everytime you see.   That's how I softened my ex-neighbor, cranky old man smoking cigarettes outside while I was walking the dog at the evening, never reacted by any means when I greeted him. It took about a year, but finally he smiled and nodded ever since. I won that battle of the minds. 😆
