I tried to rom hack a device to make it degoogled. They wont even let you run things like many 3rd party calendars without google play libs installed. Google basically tied all their services to how apps are even able to work. You can still give up gmail from scanning your emails by moving off. Abandon Chrome. But yeah its near impossible to 100% do without google on Android now. Its not like the early versions anymore.

@CaptainButthurt microG works just fine and Google doesn't get your data. Comes with /e/OS. Google apps don't work really but everything else still does

My problem was my job asked me to use certain apps and that sorta screwed me...I really wish there was a solid android alternative that wasn't just rom hacks with an android core still. Plasma Mobile has promise. I just want something 100% not affiliated with google. But most still don't have a strong base and could vanish tomorrow.

@slipgate @CaptainButthurt biggest problem to me was that Google maps won't work not even in the browser lol. But the maps app it ships seems to work well enough...

@teto @CaptainButthurt Yeah, luckily all my shit works on a ROM. If the maps bother you too much, the goycattle option of "improved geolocation" (towers, Wi-Fi hotspots and all that shit) is there. I don't have an opinion on OsmAnd as I haven't used it.

I just want essentially a non android core device really. Something that some mega Corp hasn't touched whatsoever. I use a Linux KDE machine as my personal pc. I'm not opposed to a totally new OS. Just as long as it just doesn't die off like many previous projects.

@CaptainButthurt @teto That would be good to have, but sadly it's not anywhere on the horizon with how fucked the hardware on phones is. There are entire product lines (die, Mediatek chinks, die) that don't have any viable ports because there are no device trees or drivers for them.
