This restriction might have a broadly good effect, but I am skeptical of the rightist “dual citizens” script.Is this really necessary? Some other countries just sell their citizenship as a premium, and just want it so they can participate in municipal affairs in a vacation home. Others might give it away as an honor to a foreign statesman. Some candidates be immigrants born elsewhere, and desire to keep their birth citizenship because bilateral relations will be a focus of their work in office. Lastly, some micronations give out citizenship easily on various terms. Would we really want to disqualify a candidate for being a citizen of Liberland, Asgardia, or some such other idealistic project?The notion of citizenship as some all-consuming allegiance seems like an artifact of republicanism. We know that many official Americans have a weaker relationship to us than native Italians, Hungarians, and Russians. We are closer to them than to Blacks, mestizos, and Amerindians due to race, shared civilization, and culture, even if we speak a different language. Lately I have been reading the memoirs of Casanova. He was a very cosmopilitan guy, but that didn’t mean he had no identity, or stopped being a Venetian when he moved to France.It seems to me this wouldn’t be a problem, it representative government worked. Voters should be able to tell which candidate is serving the nation’s interests, whether he has single or dual citizenship.
