@futurebird My kiddo sat on a bench in Bozeman, MT, yesterday enjoying the sun and got covered in ants. I said, "Oooh, I wonder what kind? You should have sent me a picture!" So today he went back. 😁

@knapjack Very cool!I love the lighting in this photo. The best I can do is that this is a wood ant from the genus Formica. This is based on the eyes looking rather large, the dent in the mesoma, the shape of the gaster, the colors and my guess at the scale which suggest this ant is too large to be Lasius. I THINK.What has she got? I wonder if it was still alive and she hunted it or if it was just something dead that she found.

@knapjack Based on the colors and the urban setting there is a small chance this could be Central European Bicolored Ant (Lasius emarginatus) which would be alarming as they have not been spotted this far out west. But there are several local species with these same colors although they are slightly larger field and mound ants. (Formica)If you see a bunch of ants like this try to get a closer photo.
