I sometimes wish I could stop being exasperated at lies. I'm not surprised anymore but I am still always astonished. "But that simply isn't true. That is incorrect."I feel like a broken record stuck on this same note. How do I grow beyond this?

@futurebirdAn 'ignorance is bliss' corollary? You're not alone.

@futurebird"That is incorrect and you know damn well it is you lying sonofabitch" The next step is to call out not just the incorrectness but also the intention to deceive and control.

@futurebird The only way forward might be confidence in the truth that manifests not as 'well akshully', but as a carriage. They long to stick it in the eye of the 'elites' , so perhaps it's time for the the silent 'oh Jeeeesuuus, it's one of *those* to return'. The facepalm delivered without a palm.Even arguing is taking it seriously. People with enough education to know better might need to close ranks and just give the propagandists the rope they seem to want.

@futurebird my usual mantra is “rarely surprised, frequently disappointed” 💁‍♀️ (this is also partly an occupational hazard)

@futurebird I share the feeling, and I don't have a better answer than (sort of) giving up on (some) people. (Pardon the metaphors ahead.) I don't know the context here but: perhaps accepting that, for some people, for some subjects, we have to walk on eggshells, or even agree on disagreeing. Pick our battles, and/or adopt a more oblique approach. Sometimes, admit some people act in bad faith, and adjust our sails accordingly.

@futurebird Something I've been waking up to, the last year or two, is that people aren't very good sources of information in the first place.I used to think "Most people are basically decent most of the time, and therefore they aren't lying", and so I'd believe people by default. And while that's true as far as intentions go, pretty much every person has been taken in by at least one lie and will earnestly repeat it, and if I trust the judgement of others I will be taken in by whatever lies they've already accepted. What I'm coming around to is discounting words and instead paying attention to actions. That goes both for me taking things in and me sending things out, although it's a tough learning curve in both directions.
