You have to get those dead canes out or it gets pretty thick in there and they try to move out to a place you don’t want them.

i got the plant from rural king about 4 years ago.1st fruit was last summer.this year, a new bush has sprouted about a foot away so my guess is that the root has spread out over those years and the plant spent time growing its root system vs fruiting. kind of a nice surprise.

Raspberries definitely do this. Run roots out to the sides and start new plants 1-2’ away that is. What I have noticed is if you plant them in a line say 8-10 bushes and train them up with wire or string, after several years of propagating the middle row will die out and you will be left with two rows one on each side of the original. Also most don’t bear fruit the first year but in the second. That’s why it’s important to cut out the old cans after they fruit to make some room and more light for the new ones.I think

Our blackberries are vicious bastards, but they give us such good berries every day that they get to stay for the time being still.

Can verify. My dad raised raspberries six decades ago. They only fruit on the second year.Sometimes you'll find a sport that makes a few berries the first year, but the bulk of production will be from year-old canes.

There’s also an ever bearing variety that will go all summer and into the fall. Most of the ones here just have berries all in one shot.

We get probably half that much a day. But that involves getting murdalized by razor sharp thorns every time. The ones in direct sun are the best, it seems.

Omfg, the raspberries were harmless compared to our demonic blackberries! Stupid chickens devoured every trace of raspberry, roots and all it seems.

Omfg, we planted a grape vine when we got this place, and it has yet to bear any fruit. Probably not enough sun / too many god damned squirrels.

It was long ago, but I still remember the raspberry jelly they made from dad's homegrown berries. They strained out all the seeds and stuff, and it was soo sweet, you just wanted to eat it out of the jar...

squirrels in the park near here, I have seen them pick fruit from the wild vines in the park, eat the seeds and throw away the grapes.
