Is it an abused weed-tree that grew in an unattended pot in your roof garden OR is it a naturally occurring bonsai? It's all a matter of perspective. About 16 years ago I started growing things in pots on the roof. Some kind of tree started growing in one of the large pots I wasn't paying attention to so I just let it grow as a kind of ornamental. This is the most universe plant in the universe. It spent one year under a tarp while workmen fixed the roof, then another just being neglected.

I've never watered it, never done anything but plant moss around the base so that it looks a bit nicer. But it simply will not die. It's now thriving again. It's very stunted, but is has small leaves so it's an accidental bonsai since it looks like a very big tree... but little. It's a survivor.

It has 16 rings but the trunk is only3cm in diameter. It grows a little each year. I don't want to think what the root ball is like. I think the moss and lichens help it somehow. I do give it a handful of soil now and then.

I'm also impressed with how hearty moss can be as I've had it die on me often when I try to grow it indoors. I think moss needs a LOT more sun than most people think. And it's not dead if it dries out most of the time. When the rain hits? It turns lush and green again. There are about 12 kinds of moss in the pot. And this makes a nice landscape for the ants that live in the walls.

@futurebird There is a lodge on an island in Nova Scotia that, well, it's an amazing place. At the beginning of the Bay of Fundy, it has rare plants, amazing geology & bird species, some of which are not from the region but are blown into the area because of storms. Decades ago, the owner of the lodge left the yard unmowed, just let whatever wanted to grow, grow. Some of the plants came from seeds brought by these exotic birds, it was amazing. Then he sold to someone who decided on a lawn. :(

@futurebird I have a succulent like this that my husband keeps trying to murder by watering or tending to it in any way. It looks more and more miserable until I chase him away and then it recovers under my aggressive neglect.

@dvandal @claralistensprechen3rd I don't know. I think both the tree and ants like the undisturbed soil and the moss. There are also various spiders, mites, and beetles in there. It's crazy how much bio-diversity fits in a pot. It was the largest one they were selling at the hardware store. I was going to grow carrots in it, but it's nice to have a little slice of "wild nature" instead.

So, what I'm saying is if you have a little outdoor space you can start a moss garden. Get a big pot, deep if you also want a random tree. But the moss can make do with about 3" of substrate. Wild soil and compost is best. Potting mix is too light and crumbly. When you see moss collect a little patch and press it down and water it. It will spread. Keep it outside. Let it get covered in slow. Let it dry out now and then. Keep adding moss and watch them fight.

Could "moss wars" be a popular TV show? It might be a little slow, but there is a lot of drama. The pillow moss seems to be winning, but it's anyone's pot.

@PizzaDemon The last time I was out there I saw a product in a garden center to "kill moss in your lawn" ...I assume this is rare or something but people around here struggle to have moss patches. We get a lot of rain, but not enough that moss comes easy. A moss lawn is about the most fancy thing ever. Because you need big old trees and undisturbed soil. And some guy in Portland is trying to kill it and grow crabgrass?Lawns must be stopped.
