@futurebird Where we live, in a box nearly identical to that, we find we can grow more lettuce that two people can reasonably eat, or carrots too small for human consumption.

@sbourne It's one of the things that's overwhelming about the roof. We will add one of these planters each year and see how well we cope with the work. My husband is not good at weeding because killing plants makes him sad? (where did I find him???)

Due to our roof being fixed I have not been able to garden for TWO YEARS. But now they are done and it's time to grow food again. Our chives survived the construction but not much else (not even the strawberries)There was a colony of ants in one pot that I would feed and I was delighted to find that they made it too!I'm fairly certain it's the same colony since they live in the hollow space of a plastic pot. I will need to plant more strawberries for them as those were their favorite.

I wonder how many species of ants I can accumulate in this roof garden? If I make enough little niches and habitats I think I could get all of the major common ants of NYC living up here (although I will not bring Lasius emarginatus up here on purpose, they are spreading enough on their own. They will show up I bet.)But maybe I can get some of the more obscure species too. This may look like a garden for plants but really it's a garden for ANTS. An ant garden ... a source of infinite joy!

@gimulnautti It's pretty mild. We've lived here for 18 years and I have a lot of experience with growing up here. It's just that with the repairs we are now starting over. Getting a few new beds and mixing it up. The wind isn't much of an issue. The sun however is intense. But when we have enough plants in one place it's cooler.

@gemlog I wouldn't have bees if I didn't have enough of a garden for them, although there is huge courtyard with flowers and a park across the street so I think they would be fine. I worry more about the hive overheating in the sun. I need a shaded area for it. This roof is HOT.

@futurebird Hell yeah! My thumbs may be a very jaundice-heavy green, but damn is it cool to toss compost on a garden and watch it roar with growth. What do you want to plant? More veggies/eatables or more utility/aesthetics? A mix of both? After the ant cultivation, of course. How much wind do you get? Would sunflowers do well?If you do get chickens, uhโฆyou wonโt get mad at them for eating any ants, right? XD

@WhiteCatTamer There will never be sunflowers as I am allergic to those. LOL. But I do think there is a bit too much wind and it might not be the best ideal. Also... don't they kind of drain the soil like corn?My big limiting factor is I just don't have enough dirt and even with compost can't make enough to keep up. And buying dirt is so expensive and you get so little.

@lispi314 @phryk It adds expense when you are building and then outdoor spaces can add to upkeep. I think there should be more incentives to create roof garden spaces. If it really got going it could produce a dent in the food supply for the city (especially fresh things that require shipping) and it would help with water run-off and urban heat island effects. Also gardening makes you a more balanced and nice person. It would help with mental health.

@lispi314 @phryk The food is great. The danger are urban gardens on the ground since there is lead in some soil from the leaded gasoline era. What my roof grown veggies loose in air pollution exposure they make up for in not needing any pesticides and NOT being shipped for weeks. I don't have to worry about salmonella in my greens due to a warm truck ride. It's much better than what's at the grocery.

@lispi314 @phryk With a roof garden you can do very targeted pest control. My mail tool is a lint roller which I use to remove aphids if I see them. Sometimes I just collect any beetles or other pests in a bag and freeze them for ant food. I have so many little mouths to feed around here.

@futurebird @lispi314 @catsalad Won't the wasp be pretty angry if it's fixated like that? @lispi314 @catsalad @futurebird Then why not just outright use one of those electric flyswatters?Without ever having used one of those on a wasp, that intuitively sounds like the most reliable way to me.If you go for tape and swish at it and don't properly catch it on the tape, you'll have the same issue as with a normal fly swatter if you don't kill it on first try: You're now dealing with a wasp that's pissed off.

@catsalad @lispi314 @phryk Hilariously some male wasps are very territorial and will do aggressive things like flying at you to defend the nest site they have found for their future girlfriend. This works on most large vertebrates since ... well wasps sting. But the one who is charging you can't ...he's just counting on you seeing wasp colors and not wanting to make him angry.

@lispi314 @catsalad Well, if it's enough of an issue to think about at this depth, it might be worth the investment, considering you can get them pretty cheap. Not gonna talk you out of the tape idea, but I'd be curious to find out how it turns out if you try it.Also @futurebird correct me if I'm wrong, but agitated (generic/social) wasps release pheromones that attract and agitate other wasps, so there's a definite incentive to do the deed quick or not at all.

@phryk @catsalad > Also @futurebird correct me if I'm wrong, but agitated (generic/social) wasps release pheromones that attract and agitate other wasps, so there's a definite incentive to do the deed quick or not at all. That was indeed one of my concerns. My hope was that the airtight seal from the two layers of adhesive would contain it, but yes, managing it is hard and just spending a plastic bag with the frozen wasp (and whatever was already in the vacuum) in the trash is just... easier. Those swatters are obnoxiously expensive but I might anyway.
