Unfortunately taxes don't not equal controls as far as the legal system is concerned, even though it does. This was established when the NFA was held up. Officially the NFA is a tax law not a gun control law. This has been taken to court multiple times and the courts held that ATF enforcement of the NFA falls under tax law and thus does not violate the constitution since the government has universal power to collect taxes.

Way back when I was a young normie and listened to Rush Limbaugh, he often talked about how he moved out of New York because of the taxes. Out of spite the state would audit him, put him through the ringer, every year for 5 or 6 straight years. Claimed it was because he did business still in the state (he had an affiliate broadcasting his show there), but they tried to go after his entire business earnings across the country. Process as punishment.Even if SCOTUS struck down this exit tax thing, I can see deep blue states using audits to try to claw back some of the fleeing wealth, or at least punishing those that escape.

I find the theory problematic. I jokingly considered running for political office in Canada but the guy in my riding is literally my neighbor.
