@futurebird They are exploiting the idiocy common today. Just look at the "wellness" industry and US gov. People are steaming parts of their anatomy that are not supposed to have air introduced, sunning their nether regions to power up for the day, sticking so many things up their hinies that have no business there, are vilifying life-saving vaccines...So this hat is like a harmless nothing that I am sure many will buy and somehow feel safer for the wearing...Sigh.

@futurebird Around 25 years ago, there was a not-very-serious paper from MIT that pointed out that tinfoil hats are basically parabolic reflectors and so, rather than keeping out rays, they will focus them on the brain.Possibly worth sharing with people who might buy this nonsense.

@futurebird Eyes are the most likely damaged by radio waves. Cataracts. Never stare into the waveguide or face a transmitting dish or Yagi! That's maybe 1000 times the power density of a phone at your ear and perhaps WiFi at normal distance is 100 times less. This is pointless unless a full body suit with metal mesh at mouth, eyes, nose and ears. @futurebird @Scofisticated the hat itself is fine. the reflective lining will keep your head warmer. it's the claims about blocking radio signals that are wrong. there is a bunch of stuff like this on fartbook. for a while i was getting relentless ads for these LED face masks that are claimed to serve some kind of cosmetic purpose, but it's a good bet they do absolutely nothing but make you look pretty unhinged.

@futurebird @oldclumsy_nowmad@mastodon.social @muddle@infosec.exchange it depends on the strength and type of signal, and how close you are to the source. an unshielded magnetron from a microwave oven will definitely cook you, including your brain. that's why there are warning signs to not stand in front of microwave radio dishes.

@futurebird buddy it's been around for a long time. I know this because I watch a lot of tumblr binge compilations and this thing showed up there accompanied by "they gentrified the tinfoil hat" and that's really what it is. The tinfoil hat is so well known that if you wear one people think it's for a joke and nobody thinks it actually works for anything in any situation, and that's probably the idea they had. It's at least a year old and probably more because time doesn't exist to me.
