RE: https://toad.social/@wdlindsy/116324190970237562Hold on. Stop the music. "The war was sold to the world — and to America’s Gulf allies — partly as a mission to restore freedom of navigation through the most critical oil chokepoint on the planet."No it was not. What is this article saying, William? Are they trying to make the public think that Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz out of nowhere, unprovoked? Are we going to memory hole who dropped the first bombs? On a school. Let's remember that too.

I've been trying to brush up on my US history and I legitimacy thought that Russia started the Cuban Missile Crisis. I was embarrassed to learn I was wrong, but I was also able to find the propaganda that confused me. In 40 years will people tell this event by saying "and then Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz starting the war?"Can we please NOT do that?

@futurebird The war wasn't sold at all. At no point in time did Trump bother consulting allies or other countries in the region, making the case for war to the public, or even clearing the low bar of asking his pliable, GOP-controlled Congress for an authorization for use of military force. The only person he consulted with was Netanyahu.

@DaveMWilburn This might work. Many people don't pay close attention to these things and the first thing they may have heard about may have been that the Strait of Hormuz being closed is why gas prices are going up.

@futurebird I think it was more that Hegseth had a few drinks and got some beef tallow on his joystick and was just totally feeling himself and his masculinity, albeit with some shame, so he also heard himself some Jesus voices to pray, pray for extreme violence, and then he started a war that rejected 60 years of military doctrine that he disdained because he would have had to read all that. That is mostly open source.

@stalbaum Please never mention "Hegseth" "beef tallow" and "joystick" in the same sentence ever again. I'm very brittle at the moment and cannot deal with this.

The radical extremist notion that we should describe events in the actual order they occurred.

@futurebird especially seeing as Iran didn't even close it for something like a goddamn WEEK after the first bombing. Traffic stopped because maritime insurers refused to cover ships sailing through an active war zone with a country that has a history of committing war crimes against civilian vessels blindly lobbing shit everywhere!

@futurebird Hmm... I'd like to know more.......since I understand the Cuban missile crisis as an attempt of Soviet regime to deliver Soviet nuclear missiles to Cuba...?

@theron29 The US put nuclear missiles in allied countries pointed at Moscow. The USSR putting missiles in Cuba was a tit for tat response to this.

@futurebird gotcha, history is getting pretty rough. Time to remember we got over Tiberious, the Habsburgs, Nero, Caligula, Christian VII of Denmark... Wacky leaders and their creative catastrophes of precious bodily fluids do tend to mark a kind of nadir, and thus refocus nations on the very real problem of competent leadership.

@apophis @futurebird we forget, at our peril, that countries have been led by total wankers in the past, and that frequently their failures have led to a serious process of refocusing. That the #iranwar is related to Pete Hegseth's weird sexuality (which is obviously frustrated and includes high misogyny) is something to be understood by scholars in a continuum of other disturbed leaders. Including a man who had one ball.

@futurebird @apophis almost as soon as I had assumed Freud was the old stuff, we need him again. That too is a disappointment in my life, this whole #maga suspension of evolution and progress, the return of psychoanalysis and measles makes me very sad.

@apophis @stalbaum I don't think you need Freud. It's not that deep and Freud doesn't really make sense most of the time?
