The vast majority of people who will be impacted by trans bans in sports will be little girls with short hair or arms that are "too muscular."It will also mean that when a woman is good at her sport the disgusting grumbling and whispering about "may she is he" gets taken more seriously. This happened with Paula Radcliffe for running marathons too fast. If it helps you to think of a white cis woman being the victim of this.Of course little black girls will take the brunt of this. As ever.

I bring up Paula Radcliffe because she was targeted despite HAVING KIDS and being very conventional looking as if that should matter. The only thing she did wrong was train better and be a total badass who could lay down sub fives til the end of time. Amazing runner. She was just ... good. And we know girls can't be good, right?

@futurebird the trans ban in the Olympics also mandates genetic testing so I think we're going to end up with a lot of athletes who have been assigned female at birth and been living their whole lives as women getting randomly kicked out because it turns out they have abnormal chromosomes

@futurebird Just last night, heard an otherwise liberal old man talk about that swimmer who transitioned mtf, waited a year, and moved up in the ranking from 250 to 13 or something. The implication: men have a biological advantage in swimming fast, and mtf individuals competing is unfair. The alternative: *some people* have a biological advantage in swimming fast. Some women are faster than some men. Why consider being born AMAB as more important than being born with large feet?

@futurebird Fundamentally, it seems strange (and misguided) that sports is to be one of the very few areas that still tries to put people in just two boxes, while we now know that sex and gender is much more diverse than we would have guessed just a few decades ago. Why not dump the whole concept of men/women sport and use other kinds of classes? In boxing, there are weight classes. Why not similar classes in other sports? For running, classes could be based on leg length, for example.

@StephanMatthiesen Women's sport clubs were created because men didn't want women playing with them. "No Girls Allowed" but it's grown men basically. So women made their own clubs. When you have these vast sexist barriers in access, in education, in cultural expectations just learning the rules of a sport and getting practice can become difficult. And at some point why deal with people who are rude and don't want you around when you could be doing the sport with other women?

@StephanMatthiesen I would like to see all "men's only" sports clubs allow women in if those women want to be there and if they meet the entry conditions. After several decades of that maybe we could decide if we still need "women's sports" Every now and then some little midwestern girl wants to play football and so she join the "boy's team" and then there are news articles worrying about it.This keeps happening because girls are generally told flat out "no you can't do this"

@StephanMatthiesen Many people think there are no girls on their local middle school football team because "girls just can't keep up" but this is totally false. There are no girls on the team because it's enforced as a "boys only" space. When someone points this out, when some girl comes along who just wants to play (and she need not be athletically exceptional, it's middle school, there are lots of boys on such teams who are not super athletes) everyone freaks out.

@StephanMatthiesen Now could we find that more boys end up doing some sports than girls? Probably. More tall people will play basketball. Maybe you need to have different leagues and levels so everyone can play. But "women's sports" exist because in most cases women still aren't welcome in "men's sports" and this is just a choice. It takes effort to enforce it.

@Pinchy63 @futurebird Well, but isn't that the same problem as in many other areas that were tradditionally male-dominated? Women who went into plumbing or construction workers faced the same problems. The resolution was not to have construction sites that are women-only, but change the culture that it is now normal to have mixed teams of construction workers (I have a building site opposite my window so I see that every day).

@StephanMatthiesen @Pinchy63 "The resolution was not to have construction sites that are women-only"Not true. I used to work doing math education for GEDs with a group that helped women get construction jobs. The org sends the women in "pods" to the same site because if a woman is the only woman at a site she gets harassed too much. The main attraction are that these jobs are high paying and it's worked out well for some who did the program.

@futurebird well, many men like me were not welcome in mens sports either. When I was a school, I absolutely hated it and most of my friends, too, because of a couple of bullies. Of course, girls face additional problems of sexism, I am not discounting that, but the bullying culture is a separate issue that needs to be tackled anyway.Yesterday, I watched a local neighborhood's unicycle team - girls and boys performing together, in a very diverse neighborhood.

@pomegranate_stew @StephanMatthiesen If you are a girl who wants to play football you need to want it BAD or it's not going to happen. Even if you want it bad, have 'natural talent' and practice hard you still might not get the chance to play at all. The barrier is so high. For boys its more like "are you kind of fit? OK have at it"Then you have people saying "you see women cannot do this at all"Now why is that exactly? We are told it's all "biology" but that is just one factor.

@pomegranate_stew @StephanMatthiesen If the little girl who just thinks football is so cool and wants to play manages to get on a team because some adults support her a little she will discover that she has "made everything political" ... at some point it's just too annoying and this is why most girl's don't bother. @charette No I'm saying only men's club should do that... that is if they want to claim to be the "main club" or the "real version" or whatever. For example in marathon you have "over all winner and placing" and "women's placing" A school would have a coed football team and maybe also a women's team. And I think in many sports the women's teams would fade in importance over time. But there is growth needed first.(There might be some clubs for boys, but not as stand ins for "the" sport.)

@StephanMatthiesen Interestingly, soccer has been more popular for girls (and women) in the US for longer than here in Germany. When my kids were little, many parents in Germany still considered soccer a boys' thing because you have to be tough to play it - while in the US it was considered a girls' thing because you don't have to be as tough as for playing football. Which I always thought illustrated beautifully the uselessness of gendering sports ... @futurebird @pomegranate_stew

@lipow @StephanMatthiesen @pomegranate_stew I think part of why soccer is popular with girls in the US is due to all of football being a black box they cannot enter or know. Like... we won't even have a "girls team" in American football. Never! Impossible! So all the girls who love the idea of running around outside playing a field sport go into soccer or maybe field hockey. And the US international team is thus pretty good. That's how that works.

She and her friends here went to watch Barça games. Those girls just owned that pub on match night. They didn't need any males, they just got drunk and loud on their own. Once she ran into me across the street and did a finger whistle the whole block turned their heads. ln German villages that's all "dude behavior".

In the US, the rare instance of a girl on a team is overwhelmingly in the position of kicker on a high school team--the footest position in all of football. This is mainly due to the adult administrators of the sport being averse to potential injury incidents involving girl athletes. Eliding over the fact that the sport routinely causes permanent bodily injury to boy athletes. Because that is more acceptable.

@CStamp I don't understand how a woman in a sport like boxing can't understand that this kind of thinking always ends with "women are too fragile and must not do sports like boxing since it could harm their fertility, the only thing that matters obviously"None of this will pause just to calm your personal level of prejudice.

@futurebird Right? She faced a more challenging opponent. Train harder, shut up. It should've been incentive to up her own game or quit.

@CStamp If a woman can't take a hit from one person it's easy to say she can't take a hit from anyone. The female skull is too thin. The uterus might fall out place from the jarring motion. (This was a real concern raised about women running in marathons)

@CStamp Do I need to post the photo of the race director physically grabbing Kathrine Switzer to stop her from running (it was embaressing since he and others had said that women simply could not run such a long race, although he would have claimed that she lied when she signed up so needed to be removed)That was 1967 which isn't so long ago.

@futurebird In 2009 I saw a great art piece where a college-aged woman had labeled a photo of herself in maybe shorts and a bikini top with things men had told her about her body and which man said them. It unlocked something for me to see that in the same year one boyfriend had told her her boobs were too big and a date said they were too small. It was in some ways freeing to see it out in the open, but depressing too. We have to talk about it, or it works.@disorderlyf

@futurebird For others, more about her here:https://cheery.world/discover-people/the-story-of-kathrine-switzer-who-men-tried-to-stop-from-running-a-marathon-but-she-didnt-give-up-and-changed-the-course-of-history-591/Her time was 4 hours and 20 minutes. She ran the race 50 yrs later, at the age of 70, and completed it with a time of 4:44:31.Wow.

@futurebird This is a nice followup: "Later in life, Semple reversed his position on women competing in the marathon..."Once the rule was adjusted and women were allowed in the race, Jock was one of their staunchest supporters. He was very progressive." Semple later publicly reconciled with Switzer. "Old Jock Semple and I became the best of friends," she told a reporter in 2015. "It took a long time: six years. But we became best of friends."" (wiki)

@CStamp That's part of what is insidious about this stuff. Some of the people behind these things (not all of them) think they are doing the right thing, or the "safe" thing.

@futurebird Reading up on him, he was apparently just an ass and used to assault any racer he thought shouldn't be running. He didn't like those he deemed unserious competitors.

@futurebird @CStamp I think about that photo a lot too. It was so recent and yet so many women don't understand that's where conservatives want to take us back to; or more accurately, want to do openly and without repercussions. Way too many white women believe that they'll be fine as long as they don't do something to piss off men (like **gasp** running). Thing is, a woman's agency is enough to piss off conservative/libertarian men. Every woman will fail that test.

@futurebird @charette i am trying to make a point to use that language for men's sports and to just call women's sports the generic name."Did you go to the men's basketball game last night? I love basketball but haven't watched the men that much...."

@futurebird The people hurt most by this are cis girls - not because their pain is worse, but because their numbers are greater. A simple case of math.Trans hate is hatred of women. End of story. If you attack women who happen to be trans, you are attacking *all* women. Anti-trans is misogyny cloaked in fake concern.Trans women are women. If they truly cared about women, they would fight to get rid of the toxic ideals of masculinity instead of worrying about other people's genitals.

@futurebird @pomegranate_stew @StephanMatthiesen In spite of which, I was denied the opportunity to skip *a* grade when I was academically testing *several* grades ahead, with the excuse "But what if she wants to play football?" Yeah, sure, the female-bodied science nerd with bad enough physical coordination to be seen by doctors multiple times to figure out why I was so unnaturally clumsy, was somehow going to join a football team...in 1980. đ

@futurebird @charette@mstdn.ca I dated a woman years ago who played American football in high school. Unfortunately she didn't want to talk about it, so I assume the harassment was awful.I believe the best woman in the WNBA is better than many men in the NBA, and have argued that gender segregated sports are competitively inferior because of this, but men I've said this to just aren't having it.And of course there is Olympic shooting, which is gender segregated so women do not dominate the ranking.

@futurebird I find one of the really telling things about this whole argument is that not once are trans men brought into it.If it was about the safety of athletes, as they often like to claim, then surely they'd be just as concerned about someone born a woman competing with men in boxing or whatever? But it's not really about trans people at all, it's about enforcing standards of femininity. Targeting trans people is just a way to get more people onboard with taking away people's rights.

@Pinchy63 @StephanMatthiesen @futurebird If that is an unthinkable tragedy, then that is precisely what these men must face in order to become better people, and gender segregated sports/undermining womenâs sports and athletes contributes to that male emotional fragility.Women get beaten by men all the time and donât lose their shit. Men should man up.
