@futurebird When I took notes as a reporter I often wrote in a half-cursive scrawl that no one but me could read. It was ... pretty bad, actually. My handwriting was never all that great.

@futurebird I learned to appreciate developing my own handwriting from my grand father who was an illustrator and typographist. He always had the most beautiful way of lettering signs in his home and the church he was volunteering in. Some of those signs are still there decades after. I liked to read his letters and started playing around with handwriting early on in my childhood because of it. I would write nonsense and just marvel at the letters. It is my favorite way of doodling.

@futurebird I don't like my writing, I find it messy and not pretty 😕I regularly have a bout of motivation to "take the time to write more slowly in a more tidy way" hoping that it will improve but it never leads to any change. Maybe it's just my usual unnecessarily abundant self-criticism at play and I should just be proud of how unique it is. (My partner makes fun / finds it endearing that I write "i"s and "j"s starting with the dot.)

@futurebird It depends on the type of writing. If it's just a note or a list, or something to be read by other people, printing. If it's creative writing or anything that requires more fluid thinking, cursive.

@emily_rugburn This is very bad IMO. It's a nonsense reason to hold a kid back. I think many schools have replaced cursive units with touch typing which is also very useful. Though neither of these things is always taught in the most thoughtful way.

@futurebird I don't know if I "like" my handwriting but I do have nonstandard ways of writing particular cursive letters, and over the years I've consciously changed the way I print certain letters. So it's very much "mine."E.g. in 2nd or 3rd grade I thought the way lowercase a looked in the newspaper was way cooler than the letter as I'd been taught, so I switched.

@futurebird My handwriting somehow evolved into an idiosyncratic mix of some cursive letters and some print, often depending on where the letters are in a word? So I chose "technically yes, but I don't" because that seemed the closest (I can write full on cursive, but it's not my default).

@futurebird I had dreadful handwriting as a child. At secondary school they made me work to improve it. I don't think it was ever beautiful but it was regular and legible. Then computers. Now I find writing by hand a bit of a chore, I don't get enough practice. It's not degenerated to my eleven year old standard, yet. It could though if I don't take care to keep doing it.

@futurebird We had to learn cursive in school, but I found it easier to use printing if I wanted to remember what I was studying. Some of my letters are connected, just for the speed of writing. People tell me my writing is quite legible, and I can take notes faster than I can type (on any keyboard). I was that kid who almost flunked 9th grade typing class (on large mechanical typewriters), because I never got over 20 wpm without errors.

@emily_rugburn @hypostase My dad is left handed and has horrible block print writing. Well... OK it's not that bad, you can always read it but there are no cases. I know too many left handed people who really struggled with writing. My dad also went through the trying to force him to use his right hand nonsense.

@futurebird for me writing cursive is much faster than writing block letters, but as i get older my hand writing gets messier & messier so i don't know that i "like" it, i can see from my journals that i prefer cursive when i have to make written notes in a hurry just because it's so much faster but it's about as ugly as block letters nowtyping is fastest of all, 125+ WPM but that's on a full-sized keyboard not a picky little screen so in the field it's cursive or voice recorder notes

@theowrites I switch to cursive when I want students to ask more questions. I have my 6th grade programming students design a cursive font with turtle-like commands and they loved learning about the letters which they regard as "black magic of old people"Each kid programed the path of a letter then we put them in a bigger script so it could write words. It was hideous!(But they did use the letter for monograms which looked better.)

@futurebird All my notes in engineering and grad school were exclusively in clear, legible printing (I’d stopped using cursive), which ended up serving me well — while I’m a little envious of all my architect/designer friends and colleagues with ‘cool’ lettering compared to my very plain upper- and lowercase, mine is so much more readable on a whiteboard.

@futurebird it depends on context. If you're writing Russian as a grown-up, you write in cursive. This influenced my handwriting in English, but I'm happy with my personal longhand, which is not usually full-blown cursive but sometimes comes close.@adhdphd recently got me into using a fountain pen, and that lends itself to more cursive-like handwriting. Also, I've been meaning to pick up some form of shorthand one of these days. I always thought it would be useful for long work meetings.

@futurebird Cursive was absolutely rammed down my throat as a school boy. Teachers insisted that it was the only real way to write and college would not accept paper written in print. Now I basically never use cursive, and think it's a crappy writing system that damages readability in favor of stylistic nonsense.

@futurebird I'm a lefty. My cursive has had better days: writing faster means less finesse, the "m", "n", "s" and "r" suffer from legibility, I have to slow down when writing for others (for example, public exams or queries to companies/state entities) so they can understand what I wrote. But I write at least two A4 pages of cursive every day.

@futurebird My normal handwriting is a weird demented scrawl that my 11th grade English teacher joked that it should be rented to the CIA as a form of encryption. It is none the less satisfying to write.I also have a slower and more legible print for when other people being able to read it is important.

@futurebird only your name in cursive is called a "signature", I write very pretty cursive, my plain type is bleh. But someone people forged letters by me by copying my handwriting. Or signatures on BIG things. That was incredibly annoying.A signature is a signifier to your legal identity. Forging a signature is considered Identity theft in some cases. :) Even Children can be fraudsters, so it's important to distinguish between all variables.

@futurebird I was successful in concealing the fact that I could read cursive from my parents for almost a year. Much useful intelligence was gained.Eventually slipped up in front of Mom, but it was useful for a while.

@futurebird I occasionally write in cursive just to remember how. I do sometimes have to look up how to do a few of the capital letters.A capital "Q" in cursive looks like a number 2 for some reason.

@futurebird While able to write cursive, I have very bad penmanship, probably due to the fact that I tried to mimic my left-handed sister when learning to write - I can't write with my left hand.My mom thought I was just playing with my siblings but didn't notice it until I was able to read, and I never really corrected my writing.

@futurebird I learned it. I painstakingly worked on improving my penmanship and that was good for my fine motor skills. But I had teachers in 6th grade who were militant about submitting papers in cursive, because "that's how adults communicate", not this computer fad.I can't think of a single instance in my adult life I've written anything in cursive. I don't even sign my name in cursive.Calligraphy is an art and I respect it as a skill, but no, it's not how I communicate as an adult.

@futurebird @jiub I think fine motor skills are an issue too, *but* where I taught folks w/ learning disabilities, *everybody* learned cursive -- but we were friendly about it -- for lots of researched reasons. Some hated it but most appreciated -- esp if they had horrible writng -- that it was a lot easier to read your own writing when you could see where words ended and new ones started. IT was the 1990s though. Everybody also learned keyboarding.

@jmax @geonz As a tutor and teaching I've learned to write upside down (eg I can write so you can read it when I'm sitting face to face with you. )I'm a little flattered by how much it freaks people out. But it's not hard. Just imagine your wrist is extra flexible and you are writing right side up.

@futurebird I journal every night, in cursive. Supposedly it helps with memory retention, which I struggle with. But I often substitute a printed letter or 2, because imo some cursive letters just look dumb (mostly the capitalized ones, if they are too different from the printed version). One time a lady complimented my handwriting, and I’ll never forget how surprised and pleased that made me feel. I think it’s barely legible.

@futurebird Another lefty chiming in here. When I took the GREs, I had to copy a small paragraph that stated I wouldn’t cheat, and it HAD to be in cursive. It took me about five minutes of mental and physical strain to finish.I do print at a normalish pace, and thankfully I was a stubborn little fuck as a kid, so I think if someone tried to make me write righthanded I’d ask why until they wanted to puke while still writing lefty.

@futurebird Other: I don't give a f. If I have to handwrite, it's most probably a note to myself. It's also probably a bunch of squiggly lines only I know how to read. Like I literally replace certain parts of certain words wit ha squiggly line because in context, the shape will be enough for me to know what it means.

@futurebird I don't feel awkward about my cursive, it's just that it's messy. I'm left-handed and have struggled with messy handwriting for decades.I've been watching penmanship videos lately, I've realised that part of my problem is that I write too fast, trying to keep up with whatever is tumbling out of my brain. If I slow my writing down, I might do better.I have recently started using a fountain pen, and it means I don't need to press so hard to write - this is helping me to rethink how fast I'm writing.

@futurebird There’s a scene in a Blake’s 7 episode where the characters are made to work without computers. One of them holds up his finger and asks the supervisor what it is. The supervisor, confused, tells him it’s a finger. He then asks if it’s better designed for pressing buttons or holding a graphite writing stick. In a typical day, I type more words than I write by hand in a typical year. All of the time in schools making me use clunky writing implements and practice a key skill for Victorians was a criminal waste of my time.

I was allowed to use computers before computers were commonly seen in schools, and I basically never write by hand as an adult. But, I wish handwriting weren't so awful for me... it's proven to have many benefits for learning and processing. I sometimes get the urge to try again but I'm just reminded of the discomfort when I try.

@swelljoe @futurebird But, I wish handwriting weren't so awful for me... it's proven to have many benefits for learning and processingIs this actually true? I've seen lots of studies that compare learning and retention of handwriting versus reading, but only a handful that tried to compare handwriting with typing and these did not control for familiarity.

@david_chisnall @swelljoe There are some studies like this one. https://www.frontiersin.org/journals/psychology/articles/10.3389/fpsyg.2023.1219945/fullBut I also find this matches my own experience and what I observe in students. For many students writing and drawing by hand (or using a stylus on a tablet, which can help students with motor issues) seems to be more efficient than typing. My personal theory is that when using a pen on paper students draw more diagrams. And drawing is very powerful.Of course there will be students who are exceptions.

@david_chisnall @swelljoe So, even with studies and personal experience etc etc I think educators still need to listen to individual students.

@futurebird I think I might not know what exactly “cursive” means here. Do you simply mean the handwriting that was taught in primary school until recently, where the letters are all joined up?

@david_chisnall @swelljoe And by "more efficient" I mean that a student retains more, from the time they spend studying or taking notes. Not that they can write more. Typing is sometimes much faster.

@futurebird @swelljoe I assume there's a strong correlation between a lot of these things and the subconscious elements. My mother writes without thinking. She can't spell a bunch of words without writing them down. I'm the same with typing, but handwriting requires conscious thought, which means it comes with some cognitive load.Similarly, I'd much rather draw diagrams with a mouse than a pen, even when using a device with a pen and a touchscreen. I find editing enables a load more modes of thought. And being able to draw a text box and type into it gives me something much more readable at the end.

@futurebird @david_chisnall @swelljoe I wonder if this is primarily true in mathematics and certain sciences, but not so much in other subjects? My OH teaches mathematics, and of course it's still hand writing all the way. Not much opportunity to get into the cursive flow of a long essay though.

@futurebird You forgot the option "does it need to be readable after the fact to count as writing ?".

@futurebird I used to hate my handwriting - it was so childish. The summer before I went to college I changed my style to be quick to write, easy to read, and looked a lot better. I guess I could claim I designed my own font? Still really like it.

@futurebird other. I think I have a bit of disgraphia. When I write fast my hand seizes up an it becomes a scribling line. The rounded letters aren't round but triangular, and not in the same direction. So for note taking I use capitals. But the weird thing is, calligraphy does work, i can do school cursive and all the medieval script types and lettering. That feels more like drawing I suppose.

@futurebird Somehow I have multiple handwriting styles. Which one I use depends on the writing implement, the amount of flat space available, the time I have, and the type of content. So I guess “it depends”.

@futurebird I've been going through the replies and finding the reasons for using/not using cursive (or block writing in capital letters or other variants) fascinating.Except for check-writing, I stopped using cursive in college. Using cursive was not faster than printing, and printing was much more legible.I am not left-handed, and there was no trauma in my education. But I suspect the people who can do cursive well can also draw, and I can't.

@futurebird @jmax @geonz Would mirror writing be possible with a similar trick if you imagine you are writing on the other side of the paper with a super flexible wrist? Not that I can do either mirror or upside down, just trying to extend the logic of your upside down approach.

@futurebird I deliberately went out of my way in a previous job to do a lot of writing by hand, because I think it's cool and fun. Also in that job I used to have a *stamp* I could *kerchunk* and sign! I don't have to write much in work these days but that won't stop me. It is embedded by now!
