One of my biggest worries today is that decreasing job security and declining volunteerism are going to multiply one another in ways that severely undercut the fabric of our country. An early indicator: The diminishment of volunteer firefighting.https://www.nfpa.org/news-blogs-and-articles/nfpa-journal/2026/02/11/volunteer-fire-service-crisisThis trend is understandable. Who can afford to spend the time volunteering when the cost of living fast outpaces wage growth, and when job stability is low?

@amuse I tried this. I was the most qualified of anyone that volunteered. Even volunteering has barriers of entry in favor of minorities, women, and the LGBTQ groups.

@amuse @HSTG I was very close to volunteering for the ohio cyber force but the cost/benefit math didn't work out for me right now.

In times of stress & uncertainty, it's a smart move to circle the wagons & protect your family first. HOWEVER: I do believe that there are important parts of our culture that are built on people helping people, and doing so on a volunteer basis, and that those are being fast eroded. I wonder what the eventual impact of that all will be.
