This is what the GNU/Linux desktop was always meant to look like. This is what GNOME and Wayland took away from us.

@SuperDicq software used to be full of easter eggs and silly fun, minimalism is so soul crushingly depressing. what's stopping us from designing programms and themes like this again?

@engel@mastodon.social High resolution displays, increasingly complicated UI frameworks and unworkable graphics stacks to actually do what you want and phone screens.

@SuperDicq @engel High-resolution isn't a problem - you just scale things to be bigger. How many UI frameworks are garbage and don't allow for scaling are a problem.

@Suiseiseki@freesoftwareextremist.com @engel@mastodon.social You can't just "scale things to be bigger", that's very naive. If you just upscale stuff you will get a very disgusting blurry mess. You need to scale different elements differently, especially fonts, shadows, outlines, etc. can all be rendered at higher resolutions.

@SuperDicq @engel Scaling pixel art linearly like macopix pixel art windows sitters will work fine. For fonts, you just set the font bigger.

@Suiseiseki@freesoftwareextremist.com @engel@mastodon.social You do not want to use linear interpolation on pixel art! For pixel art you want nearest neighbor.

@Suiseiseki@freesoftwareextremist.com @engel@mastodon.social That's why upscaling things is so hard. There is no single upscaling algorithm that works for every time of picture. Every picture type has an ideal algorithm.

@SuperDicq @engel I meant "no interpolation" - 2x scale is 1 pixel to 4 pixels.Nearest-neighbor also usually has fine results.

@SuperDicq @engel Yes, default linear scaling is a blurry mess.No interpolation gives a good result, as generally you're scaling things to be twice as big.

@SuperDicq @engel there are likely dozens of toolkits of different flavors aside gtk and qt which work perfectly fine and all have their own flavor. people just need to use them.the problem is building shit for "touch interfaces" and aping phones UI and UX with everything sandboxed and dumbed down. it's again catering to the normie masses which is the problem.

@SuperDicq If you want to be pissed off, go find out about Xresources & how you used to be able to override and adjust every last graphical element of the user interface to suit your own needs/preferencesGo look into how you used to be able to have multiple X desktops running on the same machine at the same time and simply access them through (network) sockets without stupid interposer protocols/softwareYou used to able to simply pop up a window on another machine by export DISPLAY=$IP:0

@SuperDicq@minidisc.tokyo @Suiseiseki@freesoftwareextremist.com @engel@mastodon.social i almost always use nearest neighbor/oversample or a neural network solution like https://github.com/DeadSix27/waifu2x-converter-cpp or https://github.com/nihui/waifu2x-ncnn-vulkanonce in a blue moon i'll use ewa_lanczos but thats situational.
