Man. Sailing is so zen! Not to be all hippie bulshitty, but it is great. It is you vs nature, but also you in harmony with nature. People look at it as all peaceful and tranquil, but that's bullshit. Sailing is a constant battle for survival, with breezes shifting, seas building, storms appearing out of nowhere, sudden massive ships not paying attention. It is like a slow paced battle where you survive or don't based on both your wits and your muscle. Fuck, I gotta put out to sea again. It has been far too long.

The boat doesn't sink me, not paying attention to threats does that. Situational awareness is important. Well, aside from slip fees and maintenance and all that... Fortunately, I have really good savings, and despite the absolute lack of jobs here, I persist somehow. Just fcking sailing away remains an option. But to where? Initial unpleasantness?! It is always AWESOME at first, before shit goes wrong. [if it does]. My boat is [was?] in pretty fine nick, to where I don't worry about her handling situations, so it is on skipper and crew to not fuck shit up. I had one voyage, just me and lady_nougat, coming back to land, where a storm we thought was over came back. I had to go on deck to reef the main, but she was ashen faced and clinging to the lifelines like a spaz, so okay then, no reef, I guess. [reefing is where you shorten sail in prep for a real blow]. Well, I figured worst case, we would be gettng 35 to 40kts abeam; okay, I'll just leave it all up and slacken sail and let the rail be underwater for the trip. It worked. It was stupid. We made it. I was fortunately correct. Otherwise we'd have been dismasted and probably wrecked. But I was confident the rig could handle it as could I. It was a derpish decision, captainwise.

I wanna show off some more. Rowing ashore at Catalina with our ship at anchor after the last part of the storm. All the moorings were taken, so anchoring is is, then. No charge that way, which is nice. Moorings were $40 a night then, as I recall. Probably triple that there now. The next visit, the dockmasters got us the mooring between their boats, and encouraged us to row ashore at the defunct yacht club just a hundred yards or so ashore, rather than having to row all the way in to the main dinghy dock. And then they only charged us for one night when we stayed nearly a week. Good times.
