The best communities aren't unmoderated wastelands or corporate censorship machines. They're spaces where the people who participate in and build them set the rules.I truly believe that Web of Trust allows communities to govern themselves. We can solve these societal challenges with the right open software systems.Good morning to those that have left the rage algorithms and censorship tools behind. šš¤š»š«

Derek, Web of Trust *as it is implemented in present Nostr clients* turns every large account with lots of problems into an invisible censor, able to silence people across Nostr. Tons of Nostr clients now require to turn WoT off to receive notifications or DMs from me, *even if the person follows me*. Itās ridiculous.Normal people do not understand that following someone turns them into an arbiter of what they can and cannot see on Nostr. Thatās completely unintuitive. It allows for pervasive and unaccountable censorship, not self-governance.

Nostr does need anti-spam measures. Itās just obvious that WoT can be instantly gamed by state actors acquiring accounts with large followings and then muting people to control the WoT graph. Thereās got to be additional layers, and some kind of separate authority to appeal to when you arenāt a spammer and are being targeted for political censorship.

How will your "separate authority" be kept safe from bias, bribery, blackmail, and "rubber hoses"?Right now, purchasing of a large Nostr account by government would work the same way it does right now on Telegram - the purchaser gets a window in which their lies / scams are credible, then followers figure it out and unfollow in droves. That's not a great system. But we need to make sure anything we replace it with is less-gameable, not more.

It's clear you don't understand WoT NIP-85. It's not a global metric. It's literally just for that person that decides to use it. What your describing would be true if it was global or enabled entirely across a client. But that is not the case. I could have you listed as a 6. And another could could have you listed as a 69.

Itās on by default in many clients, such as @9be0be0f ā¤ā£ -- and thereās no labels or numbers. Itās just blocking people. Itās like this in *dozens* of clients now. You can say it isnāt a global metric, but the end point is thereās people who are left wondering why they donāt get notifications for my posts or my DMs.

Please read up on Web of Trust and NIP-85. None of what you're saying is true. I get that it's confusing but I'd like to discuss it once you read it.

It's actually true. Install @9be0be0f -- then DM me. Iāll DM you back, you wonāt receive it. Turn Web of Trust off in the settings and you receive it instantly. Thereās a thread yā£ā¤ā£esterday where @ecbff975 went through a bunch of web clients saying that she never receives notifications for my replies and my replies alone. āPlease read NIP-85ā (Iāve read it) is not a refutation of what is visibly happening in a large body of clients.

There's only two or three clients that are using NIP-85 though and I don't believe Nostur is one of them. So as I said you're talking about something else.

Okay well, this is how Web of Trust is presented commonly and functionally actually working in most clients:https://freakoverse.github.io/wotonnostr/This is a common problem across Nostr ā any discussion of common problems with user experience, onboarding, etc, are deflected by āwell youāre just using the wrong client.ā Well, basically everyone is just using the wrong client for something.
