What is the ideal length of a video on a topic you enjoy? So not music, or ambient stuff. I know that there are some people who I will click on a one hour or three hour video for... but if it's just based on "interesting topic" and a peek at how long it is what do you look for?

@futurebird When the number is above 20, I tend to keep scrolling. That said, it does depend on the topic. I'll watch an hour and a half of #SomeMoreNews.

@futurebird It depends. Mainly 20-30 minutes, but I do love my weekly Perun defence economics PowerPoint presentations that generally last over an hour.

@futurebird A half hour or so. There's a reason we typically keep lessons, presentations and so on to 30-45 minutes. Much longer without a break and you can't keep focus. And it's more difficult to sustain focus online than in person. Also - and just my opinion - if you need more than 30 minutes to explain something, then it's probably complicated and multifaceted enough to merit splitting up into multiple separate talks.

@futurebirdif I just want to find out what are the commands to make something happen or similar, I want like 1-3 mins, but if its a discussion on a topic 15-30 no more... i can skim sometimes but rare for me to care enough to watch an hour or 2... it happens but mostly not

@futurebird I get most excited when the video about something I'm interested in is 45 mins to an hour. Anything more than 1.5 hours makes me hesitant

@futurebird 10 minutes. you can teach anything in a 10 minute video with a text blog post to back it up. and if you can't then you can break it up into multiple 10 minute videos.

@futurebird In general, if it's "interesting", one would need at least 15 minutes to cover all relevant subtopics, and if it's longer than 30 minutes, it should be edited down. If more than 45 minutes is *required*--as for a more complex topic--it should be broken down into multiple blocks of 15-45 minutes each. I might binge it all at once, but I do like the option to stop and pick it back up later at a designated breakpoint.

@futurebird Generally I'll skip the video entirely, and go for a book or paper or web page if the option is there. I like being able to choose how fast or slow I gather the information, and being able to skip, backtrack and review easily. Each to their own, though - so it's important to provide choices.

@futurebird If I am searching for "how to do" something, and the something can typically be done in <5 min, I'd rather the video get to the point quickly. However, if it's a exploration or "expoundment" on a hobby topic, up to 30min is fine. Longer than that is reserved for serious study ... not for flushing a water heater.

@futurebird I watch a LOT of YouTube, and the length is all over the place. But under 15 is an impulse buy. Up to half an hour is usually fine if I'm interested. Over 45 is for topics and creators I'm REALLY interested in, and for an hour or more, I really have to plan for it. Those sometimes get pushed down the queue never to emerge.

@futurebird This was hard because it definitely depends on the topic, my mood, and the day. Just yesterday I actually watched an almost 90 minute Heated Rivalry breakdown on youtube because I had time and was in the mood to listen to a nerdy person talk at length about something I love, interspersed with short clips of pretty actors. OTOH, I often look at a video title and literally say "I am interested in that topic but not 12 minutes interested" (where the number could be anything over 3!)

@futurebird My YouTube habits are usually to skip anything over 20, except with a few specific channels that I know are going to be interesting & funny throughout. I know who rambles, & who keeps it moving, you know?

@futurebird It depends on the presenter! If they're not particularly engaging, under half an hour even if I enjoy the topic. If they're particularly engaging it can be over an hour on basically any topic. But I answered the poll based on 'what's the longest video I'd click on a subject I'm interested in by an unknown agent', which is 30–45 mins.

@futurebird highly dependent on the topic and the presenter. Some folks just ramble on for wayyyyy too long, and their videos feel like a waste of time. Other folks (e.g. Folding Ideas) can crank out multi hour masterpieces. I love synths, almost no synth video longer than 15 minutes is worth your time.

@futurebird as long as I can return to it later I have no preferred length. When that is not the case I want them to not be longer than the time I have for watching at this exact moment.

@futurebird I really like long videos about my favourite topics. I will definitely go “yes! score” if I find an hour+ long video from some of my most watched content creators. It might depend on the subject though. If I need a quick instruction on some technique or other, I might go for the short one, but otherwise I’m up for a long, infodumping story.I hate scrolling for something new to watch.

@futurebird 30-45 minutes. If the topic is more complex or larger, it should probably be split into some kind of playlist to allow for „natural“ bathroom- and coffee-breaks and to split it over different days.

@futurebird I know this isn't the single answer you are looking for but may be insightful for your needs/wants.-I LOVE long form interviews between a journalist & someone with deep academic & lived experience. I get mad if it isn't AT LEAST 50 min long.-Tutorials = the shorter, the better, preferably under 10 min-"GeeWhiz that's cool" things that I didn't know but not familiar with = shorts (under 5 min)-all other videos (politics, yard clean up, dermatology, Epstein expose')= under 20 min

@futurebird It depends. As regards factual vids, few things irritate me more than sitting through 30+ minutes of talking, only to realise it could have been condensed into less than 5 mins - perhaps leaving me with the choice to continue listening for more detailed, extended arguments.Dragging vids out unnecessarily for ad revenue insults my intelligence and makes it certain I'll never view your channel again. 🤷🏻♂️

@futurebird Besides older music and movie, the only thing I watch is about trains and planes. Streaming. Polluting monsters they are, I know. But they are Zen moments.Perhaps a clip again about bread- pizza baking.Politics and influence are Zero. A bit allergic too for "Hello guys !!! 😄 " .So, 15 minutes is the limit in the stolen moments.

@futurebird In general I would rather watch multiple short- or medium-length videos than one long video. Anything longer than 30 minutes will make me hesitate.Of course, depending on the subject it can also become too short. The sweet spot is probably around 15 minutes, plus minus 5.
