What do ya'll people who use sane unit systems rather than our US nonsense system call "mileage""distance traveled" ?"meterage??""kilometerage?"(American ants talk about "inchage")

@futurebird In the UK we call distance "distance". I've always understood mileage to be about "miles per gallon" or metaphorically how far something *can* go, not just how far something is from something else. But all our road signs are still in miles so it's not like we've completely got rid of the insane units.

@futurebird In Canada at least, we call it "mileage". It is measured in kilometers, or liters per hundred kilometers for fuel consumption, or hours and minutes if it's how far away is the next town.

@futurebird Everyone I know in Canada calls it mileage. But we measure it empirically with litres per 100km. So not only are the units different, so is the construction. This works extremely well, we have yet to lose a moon shot by getting the mileage units wrong.Alas, with volume we did not get a second layer of disambiguation, and yes it did cause an incident: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gimli_Glider

@futurebird in new zealand (metric conversion happened 1969-1976) we still call the fuel efficiency or lifetime distance travelled of a car "mileage" but we measure it in litres/100km or km

@futurebird Hmm… For the three definitions of ā€œmileageā€ in en.wikipedia.org, in German:Distance traveled in the life time of a car: Tachostand (tachograph status).Distance traveled from a point: Zurückgelegte Strecke (traveled distance).Fuel economy: Spritverbrauch (fuel usage), measured in litre/100km.Business mileage reimbursement rate: No such thing, afaik.

@futurebird in Mexico people say kilometros por litro (Spain prefers reciprocal units: litres per 100km). There is a word kilometraje, but unlike mileage, it doesn't do double duty: it only means total number of km a car has traveled, not both that and km/L.

@futurebird We've been metric since the 1970s and still call it "mileage", The same way phones still have "dial" tones but they're all push-button now, or that work still has smoko at 3 p.m even though smoking indoors has been prohibited for at least 20 years.

@futurebirdMileage rules amongst Aussies I know. Nobody. NOBODY says kilometreage. Ever.Economy or efficiency are also used, sometimes prefixed with fuel. If I'm talking about distance, as Kit says hours, or ks (or clicks). Yeah, it's about two hours away. Yeah, it's about 200ks (200 clicks) away. šŸ™‚

@futurebird @Unixbigot EV people seem to always talk ā€œrangeā€, and have this glorious stat called ā€œcharging speedā€ which is literally a speed (kilometres per hour or miles per hour) but it measures how fast you can add range to the battery. Numbers are usually absurd, in excess of Mach 1.

@futurebird in Dutch: "afstand" = distance (as in "200 kilometer") or in areas with chronically slow traffic: "... uren rijden" = number of hours driving
