Is there a class action lawsuit I can join against Microsoft for all the lost work from Windows deciding to reboot in the middle of the night and close all your shit? everyone with ADHD or brain fog at bare minimum deserves like 2000$ in compensation

@glitzersachen I mean, me too. you can't have been in the computer industry as long as I have without dreaming of Redmond in flames. but I figured this was a compromise we're more likely to get

I had a lot of other projects in motion, but I don't remember what any of those were, so I can't check if they were interrupted.see I've got this mental condition where I can't remember things very well, fortunately I've got a wonderful assistive device called "the computer" which remembers them for meuntil it doesn't

you CAN fix this problem by upgrading to Windows 11 Extra Pro Security Edition or whatever but you have to pay Microsoft for that and frankly that's not the direction money should be moving in this situation. They should be paying me to apologize for shitting on my desk

what was the command I used to process side 1? I'd customized it to run fastest with my particular computer setup. no worries, I can just hit up a few times in the terminal and... OH WAIT

@foone wait, is that real? You have to pay Microsoft extra money so you get to pick whether or not your PC reboots?I haven't had a windows pc since forever, is this hyperbole?

@hp no, they only expose the official "don't ever force a reboot" option to Pro users who can use the Group Policy. Now you can work around it by doing registry hacks, but this isn't supported and Microsoft has a history of changing how it works to break the hacks

@foone that is WILD.So if you want to do something important that takes more than 12 hours to complete you should remember to.. what? Unplug the Ethernet?I'm actually shocked by this.

@foone "Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options > Automatically save my restartable apps and restart them when I sign back in" might help you. (I'm a "close everything and shut down my computer at the end of the day" weirdo so I don't know how well it works, though.) https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/sign-in-options-in-windows-8ae09c04-c5da-41c9-972f-b126a13d18a8

@rgsteele yeah that's on, it doesn't really help. Very few things support it well enough to resume where they were.

@foone yes, you are correct, but you also should have learnec from this happening again and again years ago, and switch to a better OS.

@foone @hp Imagine still not being able to do hot/live patching without downtime after decades of development with the budget Microsoft has.Embarrassing.
