Our Apple TV died. I am practically unemployed and can't afford a new one.Any recommendations for something else to connect to our TVs HDMI input for US$30 or under? I want something that can play my own media (Plex or just SMB shares or anything). We also want to watch YouTube. If it works with Netflix that is also a plus.I do have an office PC I'm not using that runs Linux well if there's something I can install on that that is “couch-friendly" (not “use a bluetooth keyboard & mouse”)

Roku has some models around that price point, but I doubt the user experience on those would be stellar. Or there are lots of linux friendly HTPC front-end options for an old pc and you can spend the $30 getting an HTPC remote for it so you don't have to break out the full keyboard/mouse. Hope the fan on that guy is pretty quiet though, running a full workstation as a set-top box can be a bit noisy.

@aradiogurl Oh wow yeah we modded an OG Xbox and ran XBMC back in our student dorms in the early 00's, hooked it up to a cheap VGA projector and an IKEA bedsheet, glad to see that's still kicking around!
