Once the lifeblood of online creativity—from silly games to iconic animations—Flash has all but disappeared from the live web. In our latest Vanishing Culture essay, free-range archivist Jason Scott explores why Flash deserves to be preserved, and how the Internet Archive is keeping it alive.🔗 https://blog.archive.org/2025/08/06/vanishing-culture-why-preserve-flash/ 🕳️ #VanishingCulture

@internetarchive Homestar Runner was absolutely fantastic while it was in Flash. It's still good on YouTube, but the robustness of the interaction on Flash - all the Easter eggs and extra content - was what made it so damned amazing. I'm still a Homestar Runner fangirl. I've had 4 Strong Bad themed license plates in the last 20 years on red and black cars.

@internetarchive I don't know if you guys know about this, but there is a dedicated archive for Flash (and other stuff) called Flashpoint Archive. It's worth taking a look at.

@internetarchive Most of the truly amazing things on the aughts web were flash. So much creative animation and interactivity. It was killed by the commercial web.

@internetarchive in the late 90s and early 2000's I was making a lot of online interactive art, all developed with Flash. For me it was the gateway drug to a whole career as a UX designer. It was a fantastic integrated design/development environment that allowed for really artisanal experiences to be created by a single individual. I've never seen its like since. Between the deprecation of the plugin and OS changes making local exe's obsolete, all my early work is unfortunately lost now.

the idea that HTML5 could in any meaningful way replace flash was absurd, but such was the narrative.to this day mozilla still doesn't even get html5 audio right

@internetarchive Let Flash R.I.P.I was so happy when it was no longer necessary. Too long this piece of sh*t had to be installed to play videos on the web.
