Right then. STORY TIME THREAD. For reference: in USA it’s called Oscars. In UK it’s BAFTAs and here it’s AACTAs. So I was nominated for an AACTA for best soundtrack, awards to be made on the Gold Coast - which is cool because it’s got theme parks. Ceremony required formal wear, flights and accommodation - all up about $5000+ but ok what if I won and no show? That would be bad. (more)

So we fly up and doll up. Off to (allegedly) The Home Of The Arts. Now I’m sure everyone here has endured a crowded party where you know no one and they are seriously on the piss like a bunch of drunk king penguins. With no contact from our team, we’re just getting poured like a cocktail from end of the ‘red carpet’ to other. I manage to get a hold of our seating numbers and then realise the doom that awaits. Time to eat as many canapés as you can shove in your face. (more)

We’re going to be locked in the theatre for 2.5 hours. Most of the audience are tanked. And I already know from our seating numbers that there will be no AACTA for me - we are at dead centre of a long row where we would not be able to reach the stage. Should have immediately bailed out but no we were the only technicals representing our damn film. The big prizes are awarded on a following night. We did get: Best Screenplay. Best Set Design. Best Actor. (A bit more)

Best screenplay and actor sounds OK doesn’t it?Well that’s kind of sad because implies that the direction wasn’t up to the script - way wrong. “The Correspondent” was shot all first person perspective - a very careful decision and difficult to do. And the music was fully electronic partly designed to alienate the viewer.BUT the movie that won everything was Bring Her Back. And that is a great film. So that’s fair enough!

@lardmotel I always get the impression with awards ceremonies these days they try to please as many films or music stans as they can by distributing the awards so as many nominees as possible get some kind of recognition. Sorry to hear it didn't work out. When in these sorts of situations I try to remember what Richard Feynman said about honours. Did you trip and fall or have any paparazzi shouting out at you to pout more? If not I'd say that's a positive...

@MaxCorp in Australia there’s going to be a big winner which gets every award because it hopes to then get best foreign film out in The Real World. Then there’s an ‘alternative larrikin or cute’ option which soaks up the people who think they are different. That leaves some for the rest - but not much.
